i-Leica Posted May 22, 2021 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) HI, I noticed that the new 24-70 is nice sharp in the corners at 2-3m distance but only sharp in the centre when taking pictures near the closest distance (f 4.0-5,6) - how is it with the 24-90 (or 16-35)? Thank you
Advertisement Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Hi i-Leica, Take a look here SL 24-90 - is it sharp corner to corner bei short distance pictures?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Stuart Richardson Posted May 23, 2021 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2021 The MTF shows it has above 40% contrast at the edges at 50mm and 1m at 5.6 of f8. That is probably your best bet. If you want sharp corners at short distances, what you really want is a macro lens, not a zoom lens. But Leica has done very well with their zooms. If this is a regular part of your practice and you want a Leica solution, the 120mm APO Macro S and adapter or the 100mm APO Macro Elmarit R and adapter are your best bet. If you do not care about who made it and want a native lens for less money, the best bet is probably one of the new Sigma Macro lenses, which have had very good reviews. i-Leica Posted May 23, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted May 23, 2021 I also have the 105mm macro lens from Sigma, but what I want in daily use is close distance pictures without the need of changing lens (close-up and overview with one lens) and the 24-70 doesn´t deliver here.... Photoworks Posted May 23, 2021 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2021 are u using sigma 24-70 to Leica? it seams the Leica does better across the frame, but minimal improvement. The 24-90 is excellent even at closeup. a night and day difference in some situations .

mumu Posted May 23, 2021 Share #6 Posted May 23, 2021 I had the opportunity to test both lenses, side by side at the Leica store in Wetzlar. We checked the shots in the shop and i decided to keep my Vario—Elmarit SL 24—90 for quality reasons and the imaging performance, which is clear better especially in the edges. JimKnopf Posted May 24, 2021 Share #10 Posted May 24, 2021 i think the discussion is far too theoretical. if i look at the pictures here in the forum, i claim the sharpness of the corners will never be a problem for a good or bad picture I use the 24-70 professionally and it's more than good. the 24-90 had the first APO SL 50mm as a scale. The 24-70 is at least as good as an M lens in terms of sharpness and image.
i-Leica Posted May 24, 2021 Author Share #11 Posted May 24, 2021 the problem I have is that I need sharpness over the entire frame - not artistic pictures but documentation of mostly flat surfaces

I suppose that you don't want the Leica look. the m lenses are ofter a curved focus plane to get the signature 3d pop.

Exactly - no need for this lens. For the Leica look I would take another lens (maybe 35 SL or 35M FLE) and be creative
