HI,

I noticed that the new 24-70 is nice sharp in the corners at 2-3m distance but only sharp in the centre when taking pictures near the closest distance (f 4.0-5,6) - how is it with the 24-90 (or 16-35)?

Thank you

The MTF shows it has above 40% contrast at the edges at 50mm and 1m at 5.6 of f8. That is probably your best bet. If you want sharp corners at short distances, what you really want is a macro lens, not a zoom lens. But Leica has done very well with their zooms. If this is a regular part of your practice and you want a Leica solution, the 120mm APO Macro S and adapter or the 100mm APO Macro Elmarit R and adapter are your best bet. If you do not care about who made it and want a native lens for less money, the best bet is probably one of the new Sigma Macro lenses, which have had very good reviews.

I also have the 105mm macro lens from Sigma, but what I want in daily use is close distance pictures without the need of changing lens (close-up and overview with one lens) and the 24-70 doesn´t deliver here....

I had  the opportunity to test both lenses, side by side at the Leica store in Wetzlar. We checked the shots in the shop and i decided to keep my Vario—Elmarit SL 24—90 for quality reasons and the imaging  performance, which is clear better especially in the edges.

but also at a close distance? thats what the 24-70 can´t do....

i think the discussion is far too theoretical.
if i look at the pictures here in the forum, i claim the sharpness of the corners will never be a problem for a good or bad picture
I use the 24-70 professionally and it's more than good.
the 24-90 had the first APO SL 50mm as a scale. The 24-70 is at least as good as an M lens in terms of sharpness and image.

the problem I have is that I need sharpness over the entire frame - not artistic pictures but documentation of mostly flat surfaces

you will bw happy with the 24-90.

I suppose that you don't want the Leica look. the m lenses are ofter a curved focus plane to get the signature 3d pop.

Exactly - no need for this lens.

For the Leica look I would take another lens (maybe 35 SL or 35M FLE) and be creative :)
