Melissen-Ghost Posted May 14, 2021 Share #1 Â Posted May 14, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello folks, while Im still in the test phase of my new SL2-S I discovered a nuisance when shooting in A Mode (which I almost exclusivly do). Having the zebra clipping activated I was wondering why the highlights clip so easy with the SL2-S. When I want to shoot a contrasty scene I often need to compensate the exposure to minus 3, and still have not all the hightlights saved. When I finally spot meter to get all the highlights all the previous dark- and mid-tones are now almost black in the EVF and I can't judge my composition anymore. I know that this is common of course, but I have the feeling that the highlights clip so early on the SL2-S. Is it the case that in reality there is much more latitude and the default threshold is just very low? Is there a way to disable the Expose Preview also for A Mode so that I could just spot meter for the highlights and then still see the whole composition. Since there is only a P-A-S-M and P-A-S Mode I guess not? Thank you in advance.

LD_50 Posted May 15, 2021 Share #2  Posted May 15, 2021 Shoot a few photos and compare the results to the zebras and histogram. You’ll learn how accurate they are for your PP results. Also try highlight weighted metering to see if that helps. Try adjusting JPG settings, which may affect what you see in the EVF even when shooting raw.  I don’t have much issue with highlight clipping but I don’t use zebras in the EVF. I do think the matrix metering errors on the side of clipping highlights and that’s why highlight weighted metering was just introduced.

The zebra function is most certainly tied to the JPG setting you've selected, and that represents your EVF picture. That way, it measures the whites with a contrasty and graded image in 8 bits. In the DNG files, you'll find tonnes of headroom later. At least I do. Like you, I only shoot in aperture priority mode but rarely have to compensate. I was used to using zebra back in the day when a Betacam ENG camera was my tool, but with today's dynamic range, I don't see the advantage anymore and happily switch off the distracting zebra patterns.

This is sets my mind at ease and I already experienced that I had a lot of DR and information in the highlights from RAW files when the camera said it was clipping. I just almost never tried to not safe the highlights according to the clipping. I will switch zebra off from now on. Youre right it is very distracting and I even like my EVF completely clean with just the basic info when half pressing the shutter button.
LocalHero1953 Posted May 17, 2021 Share #5 Â Posted May 17, 2021 I don't have my SL2-S with me at present, but I think you can set the criterion for zebra clipping, so you might be able to change it from, say, 5% to 1%. Apologies if I'm wrong! I always assume that a small amount of zebra is just a warning you are approaching highlight clipping - highlights will not necessarily be clipped.
