tomrc Posted April 16, 2021 Share #1 Posted April 16, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am new to Leica. Just received a SL2-S and 50 Summicron-M f/2 lens. This thing is beautiful. With my other kit, I had several lenses and I usually kept them off of the body when I was not using the camera. However, since I only have one lens thus far, and I am not familiar with the best way to treatise camera, any recommendations on whether to keep the lens on or off the body when in my bag? Thanks for any replies, Tom

otto.f Posted April 16, 2021 Share #2 Posted April 16, 2021 (edited) On, if the bag allows. Why would you bother to change everytime and exposing your sensor to dust. Edited April 16, 2021 by otto.f
darylgo Posted April 16, 2021 Share #3 Posted April 16, 2021 If cameras could talk it would certainly tell you how lonely it is without a lens to hug tight. Keep em together. Seriously, you ask a good question. And long term storage it could perhaps be best to separate them to keep issues like fungus in lenses and pitting on bodies from effecting the other component. hoppyman Posted April 16, 2021 Share #4 Posted April 16, 2021 My suggestion is to keep a lens fitted. The first advantage is that you are only vulnerable to getting foreign matter on the sensor cover glass when a lens is removed or mounted.. When I had my SL my only lens was the 24-90. In 20 000 or so frames I never needed to do any cleaning. There is an automatic cleaning system I understand. With lens changing now on my SL2 and some thousands of exposures so far, I hadn’t had any issue either.

I've had both occurrences and I live in a dry climate. A Leica M6 Titanium became pitted and I understand zinc was the cause. A 90mm Tele-Elmarit developed fungus while in storage. Both items were stored for years without use, and I believe I read both items were known to have these issues.
