I moved away from my favorite camera, Digilux 2, a while ago and it has been sadly hidden away in the closet. With Adobe adding Super Resolution to Photoshop (and Lightroom soon), I wonder if anyone has put their Digilux files through the Super Resolution process and evaluated the results.

Would love to pull the D2 out and start to use it again. The limited resolution is what brought me to move on. If worthwhile, I might finally upgrade LR to bring me up to date and bring the D2 back to life.

Thanks

For the few occasions that I needed to increase file dimensions, I used Blow-up, a plugin supplied by Alien Skin. That worked very well, within limits. Certainly good enough for publication. More modern sensors have eclipsed that need. Just enjoy your D2 for what it is.

I did an interesting experiment today with my Leica Digilux 2 (LD2). As you may all know this is an old digital camera - introduced I believe in 2004 - that is 17 years ago. It has a fabulous cult following for such an aged old gal!

It has only a 5 megapixel sensor - tiny by todays standards but the images are "pure Leica".

I took a rather boring shot of our garden bed in RAW format with the LD2. It was 2560px by 1920 px resulting in a 9.9 Megabyte file at 4.9 Megapixels. This is our "Original".

I took this file into Adobe Photoshop CC 2021 with the new Super Resolution Enhancement feature. I ran the file image through Adobe Camera Raw and applied the Enhancement feature. The enhanced version resulted in a newly created enhanced dng file of:

5104 px by 3840 px creating a 19.6 Megapixel image with a file size of if memory is correct of 112 Megabytes at 300 dpi. This is our "Enhanced" version.

Here is a jpg screenshot version of this enhanced image. Simply outstanding!!! This gives new life to small sensor cameras indeed.

Here is an additional image of our yard taken with the Leica Digilux 2 after processing in ACR with the Super Resolution enhancement. I had to post this as an external link because it is 35MB in file size as a tiff.

I have been experimenting with Topaz Gigapixel but since I discovered the new Adobe enhance feature I've revisited a few files and it's interesting.  I think Gigapixel produces a cleaner result, but only because the noise reduction is quite heavy.  I've never been totally happy with what Gigapixel does to low res images - below 10mp - though Gigapixel can work wonders with high res files.   Adobe super resolution gives better detail on these low res files even if it doesn't clean up the images so well, and I think it may be the answer for those of us with low res sensors like in the Digilux 2.
