My Digilux 3 was stolen today at my home

Someone broke into my home today while I was at work. Apart from various items that they took around the house - computer, my watches, bags, they also took the newly purchased Digilux 3, Leica Billingham Combo bag, Panasonic Lumix FL-500 flash, Leica UV filter and accessories.

Sadly the Leica warranty does not cover theft, just damage. So I am left with nothing except credit card bills to pay of the items that I don't have at anymore.

Credit card covers loss of up to USD500.00. Yeah, right. I am obviously filling up a report to recover at least something.

Police came over, fingerprints were taken, and my home in a mess.

It's all material. I wish I could tell that to my credit company as well.

Sorry for your loss leonpro. :(

You may want to keep an eye out on your local craigslist in case the thieves don't fence the equipment to a pawn shop. If you possibly see your equipment, call the police to investigate. Other than that be sure to check with your homeowners/renters insurance for coverage and your accountant to see if you can write the loss off on your 2007 income taxes.

Secure your house and then get another D3 or if the $ are tight the doppelganger Lumix L1at Amazon via Adorama.

Thank you. Much appreciated concern.

Will check your suggestions especially regarding asking the accountant if this can be recovered somehow.

As for another D3. Perhaps some day again.

I was banking on the four thirds standard and hoping Nikon or Canon join the bandwagon. In the meantime, I decided to pick up a Nikon D80 first while waiting for the D300 by November. Hoping my gigs will help pay for the stolen camera and equipment as well as pave the way for the next purchase I made.

Any camera recommendations? Nikon D80 or Canon 400D? Any serious advice much appreciated.

Forget 4/3! Yes I have a L1 but when I have the opportunity to sell I'll buy a Nikon again. D300 will be my choice. Lenses are everywhere, from different manufacturers, expensive or cheaper. Creative light system is available when use SB flashes and a lot of features more than this L1/D3 narrow system can offer.

Have a good luck with your problem!

If you contemplating Nikon's I would suggest you take a look at the Pentax K10D.

I think its the best value in the mid range DSLRs. I picked it over the Nikon D200 as my first Digtial SLR and have not been disappointed (I am Leica RF user so I am picky!) It's not perfect...but the raw image quality is excellent. Most properly exposed images open in LightZone need very little if any additional work unless I am converting to B&W. I find ISO at 1100 excellent with some minor noise clean up.

Plus:

It's weather sealed

Has very flexible ergonomics and (a plus for me) NO PROGRAMED SCENE Settings....

just very flexible options including some new ones like setting and aperture and shutter

combinations and letting the camera select the ISO with user control of the ISO range to be used

Saves DNG in addition to the usual Raw(PEF) or JPEG

Has a programmable instant raw+jpeg switch

Uses the long established Pentax K mount (plus M42 threaded lenses with an adapter)

The kit 18-55 is very good and the emerging Pentax digital lens line is superb. Lots of good used glass available.

Prices presently running in the $750-850 range with the kit lens.
