vedivv Posted January 16, 2021 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just wondering, anyone compared Q2 EVF with other cameras? I sas at an electronic store that actually carries a lot of different camera brands. Tried EVF Sony A7SII, Canon R5, and Panasonic S1R, all of which have higher resolution EVF. But for some reasons, the EVF experience was not as good as Q2. But I could not tell much difference between the EVFs of Q2 and SL2. Does it has more to do with the optics used with the EVF than just resolution?
Advertisement Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Hi vedivv, Take a look here Leica EVF Quality. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ingo Posted January 16, 2021 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2021 If I understand it correctly, the EVF is the same on the S1(/R) and on the SL2 but Leica uses glass instead of 'plastic lenses' for the EVF. That's why it looks far better (in my eyes). I assume that the same is true for the Q2. I always found the the EVF of Sony and Nikon very poor. nicci78 Posted January 17, 2021 Share #3 Posted January 17, 2021 (edited) Just take a look at the CL EVF. It is so good that you won’t believe that it is a 2.36 million dots variant ! It totally beats the Visoflex typ 020 with 2.4 million dots. What’s really important is the viewing optics in front of the tiny screen. Because almost every manufacturers are using the now ubiquitous OLED panels made by Sony. The only way to distinguished them from the competition is to use excellent glass Just look at the dramatic improvements between Q LCOS 3.68 million dots with subpar very highly reflective glass vs Q2 OLED 3.68 million dots and very good optics Hopefully Leica up their game since the Q and Visoflex typ 020 unimpressive EVF. vedivv Posted January 18, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted January 18, 2021 That makes a lot of sense. EVF does not affect the IQ, but makes a huge difference in user experience. We are certainly paying for brand premium on Leica, but the extra money went to good places. Wish they used higher res EVF on Q2M, as the SL2 EVF was available when Q2M came out. But honestly, I could not tell much difference in EVF between Q2 and SL2.
Mr.Prime Posted January 18, 2021 Share #5 Posted January 18, 2021 (edited) For me, these EVF’s can still not replace an OVF, but each of us may feel differently on that topic. I hope that one day there will be EVF that I will find as good as an OVF because they offer so much more in the way of options/features. I suspect that resolution is the main thing holding me back. I had a CL and it was certainly a good EVF but still not enough to replace my love of OVF. I believe that it will require at least 10M to 29M pixels to pull off this trick. Given that image sensors can be made small with 12Mp (iphone) there is scope I think to push micro display technology further. RoySmith Posted January 19, 2021 Share #6 Posted January 19, 2021 I think the reduced dynamic range of a EVF is as much of a hindrance as the number of pixels.
