Hi,

I have seen some pictures taken with the SUMMICRON-R 1:2/90 LEITZ CANADA (https://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/90mm_f/2_Summicron-R) and I really like the rendering, so I was planning to buy it.

However, this night I saw on Ebay a lens with the same name, Leitz Canada Summicron 90mm f2, but this time with the M mount.

I'd actually prefer it in M mount so I do not have to use the adapter, however the question is: is it optically the same lens?

Thank you

No, the Summicron-M 90/2 (Version III, 1980-1998) has another optical design. But according to Erwin Puts the performance in comparison to the R-Version is quite the same. By the way, the first and second Version of the Summicron-M 90/2 (1957-1979) have a totally different design (6 lenses instead of 5 lenses).

I have had both versions, the Summicron-R 90/2 and the Summicron-M 90/2 and I sold them both without regrets. First I sold the Summicron-R because the Summicron-M was more compact and lighter without the adapter and then I bought the Macro-Elmar-M 90/4, very light and compact. I am very pleased with the Macro-Elmar so I finally sold the Summicron-M.

Please have in mind that the distance for portraits is about 2 meters and the zone of sharpness (Hyperfocal Distanz in German) is 12cm at aperture 4 and 6cm at aperture 2. I like to have the complete head in the sharp zone including nose and hair.

If you like the special rendering of the Summicrons (before the APO-Versions) and you don't mind the extra weight of appr. 100g, then I recommend the R-Version, it is the cheapest lens.

For me the Summicrons were typical "one-trick ponies". I am very content with the all-purpose Macro-Elmar.

Please excuse my "bumpy" English😫
