Apologies for the delay on this, life has been too busy to test your theories. The flashlight test revealed nothing out of the ordinary, except sore eyes on my part, though I'd never pretend there isn't a huge chance that I'd miss something! I did just put it on the SL (to ensure focus and give me an idea of what's going on through the lens as I shoot) and I think those of you that suggested a lack on contrast due to the sun flare were correct. Here is one of my cat indoors, then another where I got it to flare deliberately outside (carport above Subaru in first post) and another where I used my hand to block the flare I could see in the EVF. Probably much harder to do this on a rangefinder, but I guess that practice makes perfect and with digital I can always crimp it! Thanks to everyone for their help, I appreciate it (especially lct for the effort).
