Apparently, this picture was taken during low tide.

Left: Laeiszhof, built 1897-98 for the shipping company F. Laeisz* (still their main office today), Bernhard Hanssen, Wilhelm Emil Meerwein and Martin Haller.

Right redbrick building: Haus der Patriotischen Gesellschaft** von 1765, Theodor Bülau 1845 – 1847, using back-then modern technologies like a concrete footing and water-closets.

Thank you for your interest

Stefan

* They were one of the last shipping companies using square-riggers until the late 1920s, when fertilizer could be produced artificially and salpetre didn't have to be shipped from Chile any more.

** or „patriotic society“ in the sense of promoting the public welfare. They introduced lightning rods and potatoe plants to the city and founded the first penny bank in Europe, the public library system in the city, a predecessor of unemployment insurance, two museums and what became the university of applied sciences in the city

The Laeiszhof was undamaged in the last war; in the left upper corner of the picture the tower of St Nicolai can be seen, where only this tower survived the war.

Thank you for looking, Wally, Graham, wirthual, 01maciel, AZach and jdlaing
