dcarter Posted August 22, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted August 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well my Digilux 2 failed and upon sending it in, I was informed that it was the circuit board (surprised, thought for sure it was the sensor) at a cost of 450.00 for repair and they were going to go ahead and replace the sensor too..With a lengthy wait I opted for the Digilux 3 trade in replacement and much to my dispair was very disappointed. I had a feeling but went for it anyway. So I sold it!!! Well happy days are back, as I have just located and purchased another Digilux 2 that had just come back with the new sensor from leica...... This camera is truly a little gem and I am afraid there may never be another (to my liking anyway). So cheers and if your waiting for your Digilux2 to come back from the repair, hang on, it's worth the wait. Â Darlene
Advertisement Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Hi dcarter, Take a look here Oh my, what did I do???. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
doubice Posted August 22, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted August 22, 2007 Darlene, Â I am also waiting for my Digilux 2 to come back from New Jersey with a new sensor. The exchange for a Digilux 3 was not offered to me but, I would have declined anyway. Like you, I feel that the Digilux 2 is a magnificent camera. Â Out of interest, can you be more specific as to what you disliked on the Digilux 3? Was it image quality, size, weight, handling or something else? Â Best, Â Jan
dcarter Posted August 22, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted August 22, 2007 Hi Jan, The deal was not offered to me originally but when I called to talk to someone about my repair estimate, I asked if that deal was still available and she said yes. They are great at Leica. Very efficient and helpful. I have no complaints! As far as my disappointment, it is quite subjective but here it is: Â Size and weight was not too much of an issue, I expected it. I didn't like the shutter noise. It sounded like a race car (I also have a Canon 30D and have also owned Hasselblads, so I am aware of shutter noise). Quality was okay, just different than the Digilux 2, perhaps I am bias. But that's my view. I really missed the discreteness of the D2, no noise....small...etc...and.....I am one of THOSE photographers that really enjoy composing on the LCD (I guess it is from all those years with the Hassablads) I would compose on the LCD then watch with my naked eye for the decisive moment and click (Very minimal delay that way. I photograph my Husbands band live alot) One of the clinchers for me was the depth of field scale on the D3 (hard to use, pretty general and large range)....I love the depth of field scale on the D2 (I have used it flawlessly in dark and difficult to focus shots)... One of the things I enjoy about the D2 is it is a carry along camera for me. It's small and light enough to not be a burden. Sooooo until and if Leica comes up with another true D2 (maybe more pixels) this is my camera of choice. Darlene
Likaleica Posted August 22, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted August 22, 2007 How long did it take to get the Digilux 2 back? My aperture ring has an issue - the detent between AF and AF Macro is broken, so it keeps going to AF Macro. I want to get it fixed, but am concerned about a lengthy wait. dcarter Posted August 22, 2007 Author Share #5 Â Posted August 22, 2007 Actually the sensor back order is the problem. I don't think repairing your focus ring would take long at all. You can call Leica repair dept and ask about the turn around time for your repair. They really try to be helpful. Darlene.
krabat Posted August 22, 2007 Share #6  Posted August 22, 2007 Sooooo until and if Leica comes up with another true D2 (maybe more pixels) this is my camera of choice.Darlene  Completely agree, Darlene. I am also very fond of the DL2, and I several times tried the DL3, however, I always came back to my "old Lady" DL2..  There has been another thread some time ago with the title "An irreplacable camera". Guess, which camera was meant...  Best regards, Peter.
chouhsin Posted August 22, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted August 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Darlene and Tim, Â This reminds me of something that happened last year... Â My D2 went dead after an intense shooting in a swimming pool event. I was almost certain that the sensor was burnt since it happened in a humid environment as reported for several sensor failure. I thus sent it to the Paris repairing store. Â One week later, the store called me and said some circuit, and the aperture were burnt and Leica will be charging me some 700 Euros (if I remember correctly) to replace them. I was out-raged! I insisted that my camera was still in its gaurantee and there was a sensor failure problem known. There's no reason that I will pay for this because it wasn't my fault if Leica doesn't know how to make digital camera right. The store told me they will call Solm and see what Leica answers. Â At that time, I also suspected that the store was trying to rip me off. Â Several days later, the store told me that Leica decided to repair my D2 free of charge. My D2 was sent back to me one month later fixed with the worn-off-lense-numbers repainted. Â I am still taking photo with my D2. As you said, it is really a gem.
