Batteries for older cameras

I have a Leica CL which has had a recent CLA and adjustment to take 1.5 volt batteries. At present it is fitted with an alkaline battery which appears to function OK, although I am aware that the voltage is not as stable as the original cells. Is it possible to change from an alkaline battery to a silver oxide type without further adjustment of the meter?

I also have an SL and a Luna 6 which both take PX625 and my stocks are running low so this query also covers these items.

Any advice gratefully received as always

John,

I assume that by 'adjustment to take 1.5V batteries' you mean that the camera had a Schottky diode (resistor) installed into the meter circuit. This will reduce the voltage from 1.5 to 1.35, which was the voltage of the original Mercury based PX625.

If this was indeed done, I would recommend that you definitely use the Silver Oxide PX625. Alkaline battery voltage drops gradually, while the Silver Oxide variety holds its voltage more evenly towards the end of its life.

Best,

Jan

look at myoldcamera.com.

This does not address John's question. "myoldcamera.com" sells Zinc-Air based Wein cells, which are to be used in cameras that were not modified for 1.5V batteries. John's CL was already modified and using a Wein cell would not provide correct readings.

John's SL and Lunasix, if still unmodified, could use the Wien cells. The only drawback is that once activated, they have a relatively short life. There is a relatively simple way to convert the SL and re-calibrate it for the Silver Oxide PX 625 unfortunately, I can't find the web page with the information.....

It was published by Doug Herr, who is a frequent contibutor to the Leica Forum and I might have saved the info on my home computer.......

Best,

The original Jan :D
