Advertisement Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Hi Learner, Take a look here Newbie seek SLR primer (book). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
S. Wong Posted August 21, 2007 Share #2  Posted August 21, 2007 I would ask for a bit more information. If you are trying to: Master your R, than the R manual + Doug Herr's Site, and Erwin Puts' articles on photography and hardware. Learn general photography, I enjoyed the 40 years of Pop. Photo (1937-1977), and some books by Kodak  Any more focus is beyond my reach. I too am a beginner, and have looked at nature and wildlife photos to try to emulate it, with mixed successes. -Steven
masjah Posted August 21, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted August 21, 2007 Out of print (but you should be able to find a s/h copy) and film based photography only (but many of the basic concepts are the same) you could do worse than try Brian Bower's book "Leica Reflex Photography" (David & Charles, ISBN 0 7153 0627 8). andybarton Posted August 21, 2007 Share #5  Posted August 21, 2007 Welcome to the forum John!  If this is a digital SLR, then there's no better learning experience, IMHO, that getting out and shooting, shooting, shooting.  The same applies to film photography, but it comes with a much higher price  What kind of photography are you most interested in? If it's portraits, then buy a book on portraits, landscapes - ditto.  When I was a newbie, Caxton had only just brought the printing press to Britain, but I found general photography books only partlyuseful as I had no interest in going on safari, or taking portraits.  However, learning tha basics of composition and exposure techniques is a sound basis for any photograph, and this is what you can get out of the basics books.  You might also like to consider joining a camera club near you (I learned a lot from the old hands at my local club when I was starting out) and, fundamentally, don't be afraid to take criticism. Learn from your mistakes. We all make mistakes and take rubbish shots - whether we have been shooting for 3 weeks or 30 years. The clever ones amongst us don't think that we know it all, and are willing to continually learn and improve and experiment.  Oh yes - have fun, and post your work here. We promise to be kind  Just my 2-penneth

masjah Posted August 21, 2007 Share #7  Posted August 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) John  Just a postscript. If you go for Bower's book, make sure you get the revised edition, not the original edition. The ISBN I quoted is for the revised edition, but several of the AbeBooks entries are for the original edition. The revised edition includes additional material on the R8.
