I had a problem once with a Leica firmware update for my Q.  But in this case it would copy to the card but not install.  Seems that during the download from Leica the file was damaged, the size was just a bit shy compared to what was posted.  My second attempt was successful.

That sounds to me as you have a problem with your computer and/or Windows 7
Can you move other files on the card? PD's, JPG's, whatever files, also files bigger than the update?
Yes, try to move the files with another computer to see if it works then

If your computer is old at least as Windows 7 then the problem is probably the computer and/or Windows 7

Anyway, how do you bring the pictures from the camera into the computer? USB? Can you set your camera to use the mass storage protocol instead of the PTP one? If so, you should be able to see the contents of the SD card, and I think you then could write your firmware over the USB connection. If, might, could be 🙂

It looks like all your SD card adapters are rotten. Might be the driver. Might be the card size. How large are the cards?

I would try reformatting the SD card in a different file format (FAT32 or NTFS).  I had a similar problem trying to update my fish finder a few months ago -- the device couldn't "see" the SD card.  IIRC, had to reformat the SD card using the FAT32 format and then copy the update files to the reformatted card.

I have cracked it!

Successfully downloaded and installed in camera.

I think that the mistake I made was that when I tried to download the file a window came up asking me how I wanted to open it.

There were 2 options ‘Save’ & ‘browse’

I pressed ‘Save’ to start with when I should have pressed ‘browse’.

This I subsequently did.

When I pressed browse a window popped up entitled ‘Choose helper application’

With a list of programs but I could not see drive G for the card reader.

I had not realised that I had to press ‘browse’ again to get further into the system.

When I did so I saw drive G  and the file was in it so it successfully put itself on the SD card.

So simple and yet so confusing!

Many thanks for all your help

Keep safe

Glad you figured it out. Your frustrating experience is why I moved away from Microsoft and to Apple more than 15 years ago. It’s just a lot easier on a daily basis.

I have just the opposite opinion about Microsoft...  The firmware updates 2.0 and 3.0 went as smooth as can be with my modern Windows 10 laptop, as is post processing.  We are a 2 system household and my wife's Macbook Pro makes me crazy trying to do the simplest things.  To each his own.  😉  I glad Gers you were able to update.

Now, any opinions on the JPEG improvement with 3.0?

Good for you that you succeeded in updating your firmware.

This is not how it's supposed to work, not even in Windows. The debate about Windows vs other systems is moot when the Windows system under discussion behaves as if it was broken.

Well, all's well that ends well, I suppose.

I agree, that was a bizarre set of events.  I have been using Windows forever and was there during the development of NT.  It's for a long time been as simple as open the location where the file is downloaded to, select it, CTRL-C or copy (or CTRL-X if you want to cut and move it), then open the location where you want to put it, the drive letter of the card reader in this case, and CTRL-V or paste. Done.  Or just download it to the card in the first place.  Sounds like some nefarious software is on the system making normal file operations broken.

I find it very difficult to go between the two operating systems. I used to be pretty capable with the Microsoft OS. I’m an engineer and can usually figure out problems. After switching to Apple and 15 years of history, I’m lost solving Microsoft problems. Glad it’s working for you.
