traderjoe Posted October 23, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I acquired a slightly used M 262 recently and had a problem of it hanging / freezing at the copyright menu option - only turning it off and back on would clear it. The previous owner did not use the camera all that much and only put less than two thousand shutter clicks on it. He professed no issues and I’m inclined to believe him. When I try to go into the copyright option and populate the fields, as I scroll through to choose letters, they sometime disappear before I can choose and move to the next one. One time (and only one time) other menu items began blinking and doing weird stuff. I did my LUF search and found this thread : https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/295791-leica-m-262-hangs-while-scrolling-menu/?tab=comments#comment-3713557 I tried all the methods therein to resolve the issue with no luck. So at this point I’m thinking this is a software / firmware issue and should be easily remedied by Leica NJ at a nominal cost so I packed it up and shipped. They ran the diagnostics and said the error code indicated the need to replace the sensor assembly which most of you know contains more than just the sensor, yes? Adjust / replace printed circuit: $2095 Stunned and bummed (would that be “stummed”?). When I asked if it would stay the same or get progressively worse, the reply was, “Though we can never know for sure, it is extremely likely that the problem can get worse over time if not taken care of.” Is that CYA or what? The upshot is I had the camera returned without the repair and made a fair cash settlement with the seller (while keeping the camera). I will continue to use until its function is intolerable. Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their M 262? Edited October 23, 2020 by traderjoe Added the 2nd to last sentence

Sounds reasonable to me. Difficult to unequivocally diagnose problems on a camera they've never seen. I noticed a used one on eBay for $3400 or so. Two grand for a repair strikes me as something I probably wouldn't chose to go forward with. It's entirely possible mine does the same thing and I've just never noticed. I would probably use it till it goes belly up and then worry about it. I suppose if copyright info were a useful function for me I might feel differently, but I got along just fine for many decades without being able to imprint a copyright in camera into an exif. Of course, if that's a necessary item professionally then your choices are sorta limited. If it goes down on a job then that's what backup bodies are for. Or maybe just return it. Personally, unless it is displaying some other sort of misbehavior .......... Edited October 24, 2020 by Good To Be Retired
traderjoe Posted October 24, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted October 24, 2020 (edited) "Difficult to unequivocally diagnose problems on a camera they've never seen." The camera was being evaluated at Leica NJ at the time. My thinking was they would have some knowledge and experience with this type of problem that would give them a the ability to make a more definitive prognosis. Poor reading comprehension on my part My wife tells me that's an ongoing problem Although, in my limited experience, stuff is much more likely to get worse than better Edited October 24, 2020 by Good To Be Retired
traderjoe Posted October 24, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted October 24, 2020 Ha! Me too, but I'm only semi-retired! I think you're right, it's only a matter of when. It's body number two so perhaps I can stretch it's useful life and save my dollars in the meantime.

traderjoe Posted October 24, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted October 24, 2020 Yup, I exhausted all forum fixes (refer to other post, link above) before sending off to Leica without any luck. The fact that the Leica technician got a diagnostic error code indicating an issue with the circuit board suggests a problem beyond my ability to fix. Thanks though, another member may benefit from your suggestion!
