01maciel Posted October 7, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 7, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) What a simple question, I know. I keep each of my lens in a Neoprene protective bag (see photo) and store the in a cupbouard. In order to prevent them from moisture, mould or fungus and provided there are no chemical concerns I put one of these Silicat dry bags next to the lens. How do you store your lenses when not in use- which is, I guess, most of the time? Any advice? Photos: Huawei P30 Pro, Super Makro Mode Welcome, dear visitor! spydrxx Posted October 7, 2020 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2020 On a scratchproof surface in a wire basket allowing for plenty of air circulation, away from the sun and heating/cooling vents. That's it...never had a problem this way in over 40 years.

logan2z Posted October 7, 2020 Share #4 Posted October 7, 2020 I live in a pretty dry place, so I just store the lenses in my camera bag (in their original leather pouches) but with one of these in the bag. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0037Z8K3E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qmIFFbEDVSQNN Am I asking for trouble? Anywhere near leather is not a good idea as moisture and mould can damage the glass. Desiccant is useful but must be monitored and refreshed constantly. I also have used a Ruggard cupboard for 2 years and find it excellent and maintenance free.

cboy Posted October 8, 2020 Share #10 Posted October 8, 2020 Hi from Australia, I put my camera and lens in a dry box / pelican case w/pick &pluck foam. I bought reusable silica bead from fleabay and place into a container and replenish regularly. You'd be surprised how quickly the silica beads get used up so replace regularly. Ones with coloured indicator are good. I remember that leather cases and such shouldn't be put stored long time with camera equipment which promotes mould. Not sure if thats true or not... rramesh Posted October 8, 2020 Share #13 Posted October 8, 2020 (edited) Lenses need to be stored at the right humidity and temperature. In Singapore, a dehumidifying dry cabinet is a must due to the 90% humidity in the atmosphere. Dry cabinets are not expensive < $400 and lasts a long time. Just get one for your cameras and lenses. robert_parker Posted October 8, 2020 Share #14 Posted October 8, 2020 May I ask a question - What would you say is the optimum humidity to store a camera and lens ?
Jeff S Posted October 8, 2020 Share #15 Posted October 8, 2020 23 minutes ago, robert_parker said: May I ask a question - What would you say is the optimum humidity to store a camera and lens ? Often listed as 40-45% according to gear and gear storage companies. Low enough to avoid fungus, but high enough to prevent lubricants from drying out. Best to use the gear and not hide it away. I keep mine on open shelves in a well ventilated and temperature controlled room; otherwise out and about. Jeff

LocalHero1953 Posted October 8, 2020 Share #17 Posted October 8, 2020 All together in a plastic crate on a shelf in a cupboard. No individual wrapping, no silica gel.
pippy Posted October 8, 2020 Share #18 Posted October 8, 2020 (edited) Wow! Erm....I just sort-of have them lying around or in camera bags or on bookshelves or...just...lying around. All the 'old' stuff - things which I have for the fun of having rather than using - is usually(*) in drawers with the ubiquitous silica gel (and I know one needs to keep drying it out) but all my Leica M kit is always just 'out' and to-hand. Perhaps I'm just fortunate in living in a country with no extremes of temp / humidity but the only issues I've ever encountered (camera / lens wise) were with kit kept in sealed cases in the proverbial cupboard-under-the-stairs (fungus). Philip. (*) Unless I'm playing with any of it of an evening. Edited October 8, 2020 by pippy
