As a ne suer of a  Q 2, one of the reasons I purchased the camera was because of its ‘simple’ menu structure. The menus are not simple or intuitive  in fact they are baffling in their complexity.

I love this camera; it takes wonderful pictures & I am sure that once I have got the menus licked I shall revel in it.

I consider myself reasonably tech-savvy; I was able to operate the Fuji X100S menus no bother.  Also the notoriously complex Olympus one!

But I struggle to make this camera do what I want it to do rather than what it wants to do.

For instance in the new Status Screen, which came with firmware 2, I set the profile to number 1, the only profile I have configured to date, which I call ‘Normal’ as it has all my settings for every day shooting. Sometimes, but not always, on switching on the camera I find it has reverted to something called ‘Cancel’; what is this thing?  And what does it cancel?!  Totally confused.

Also, when pressing the button on the direction pad to ‘register’ a new command it appears that one has to do a long press; has anyone else found this?

The menus differ from Fuji and Olympus, but are not bad IMO once you have used the camera for awhile.  I came from a Fujifilm X100F and still have an OM-D EM1 Mk II.  The first thing I had to understand is the jpeg settings are limited compared to other systems.  This camera is  intended for raw shooting.  I spent time with the manual and menus after each photo outing, plus search here for discussions.  The features that I wanted easy access to I added to the favorites menu which can be found in Menu 4 Customize Control.   You can also set up your function and button assignments there.  If you long press the FN and Right Wheel buttons, you can change the default assignments.   My preferred default for the FN button is the EVF-LCD and the right wheel button is User Profile.  In Menu 3 you can set up multiple user profiles.  I currently have 4 and renamed them General, Mono, People and Night.  Again, my suggestion is to spend a lot of time playing with the menus and study the manual.

Thank you for your measured response;  I am sure I shall get there in the end.  It is just frustrating to have an instruction manual which seems to assume that one is already conversant with Leica's way of doing things.  It seems to me that, in order to have a lesser number of physical buttons  (very laudable) one button does various things depending on how it is configured, thus to get it to work as one wants Button A will only work in a certain way if setting B is configured in a particular fashion.  This is not always immediately obvious despite reading the manual!

re. 'cancel'   i am not sure i know  what  it means, but i have a hypothesis:

when  you  select one of your user profiles    (eg (in my case) 'handheld' which sets image stabilization to 'on' and  minimum exposure time to 1/60)      and  then  later decide that you want to deviate for the next shot with respect to  one variable  from the selected user profile  (eg by manually  setting exposure time to 1/8),      then you are  leaving  your formerly selected user profile (eg 'handheld') and moving into a undefined  (since not (yet) saved and named)  territory (not yet user file);  this 'not yet user file'  seems to be called   'cancel'  because it should be saved and named in order  to become a new (additional)  user file,  or should be abandoned (and thereby cancelled) by  selecting/ switching into  one of the already existing user files.

complicated? yes, sorry, and hopefully somebody has a simpler hypothesis/explanation!

I think if you have more than one profile set up, cancel simply let’s you exit without changing whichever one you have selected (which might be different to the default setting).

For example, I have a general photography profile, one for black and white and another for when my camera is on a tripod: if I am taking b&w pictures and go to select my tripod profile but change my mind and cancel, it will remain in b&w profile
