rramesh Posted September 16, 2020 Share #1 Posted September 16, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think this is the absolute best time to buy a second hand M rangefinder. So many inexpensive lenses coming out in the market from the like of 7Artisans, TTartisan, Venus Optics etc. If it at all possible, Leica should explore introducing a cheaper rangefinder line, in the 3-4K price point.

I think they have tried exploring a cheaper line in the range of excellent M lenses (Summarit). For some reason it didn't fly. I used to have a Summarit, and although a perfect lens, I kept having an irrational itch to get a more expensive 'real' Leica lens. Maybe that was the case for many other customers as well? As an individual buyer I think buying a secondhand rangefinder is a perfect option indeed.

Curious statement, poli. "More expensive" I can understand but in what way was your Summarit not a 'real' Leica lens? Philip. poli Posted September 16, 2020 Share #4 Posted September 16, 2020 That was the irrational aspect A Summicron and Summilux have more history to me and probably kept drawing me, although the Summarit was perfect and of course it is a real Leica lens as well!
Jeff S Posted September 16, 2020 Share #5 Posted September 16, 2020 (edited) If the Summarit line had been twice as expensive, and marketed as high quality, high performing compact Leica lenses (e.g., with minimal flare, no focus shift, etc), they probably would have sold like hotcakes. Instead they were underplayed by Leica, initially without premium looking hoods and packaging, and underrated by users. Another opportunity for a business case study.
