KEH shows on their website (as of a few minutes ago) a 28/2.8 from Canada, graded Ex+, at $1269. No serial number given.

With the 28s in high demand for use on M8s, it would not be surprising to have the prices rising. As I recall, there is no 28mm among the forthcoming Summarits, so their availability would offer no direct downward pressure.

The 1979–1993 28mm Elmarit-M was and is a very competent 28mm, even better on the M8 than on a film body. In practical terms, the improvement offered by the subsequent model (1992–2005) was largely greater compactness – E46 filters instead of E49. I would probably still own that lens if I had not, when passing by my Leica dealer and glancing idly at the 'used' window, spotted a mint Summicron that some damned but blessed fool had decided to dump. I dove in and emerged ten minutes later with the booty. I tell you this simply to make you green with envy ...

Considering that the queues for both the Elmarit and the Summarit seem to stretch from here to eternity, I would advise you to buy, in spite of the price. Mine went for 5000 SEK (c. 714 USD) at an auction a year ago. Because of the M8, the price may well have been higher today.
