Travelling with the SL was great with the built in GPS function,  I was able to trace where I was by checking the photo.

However, with the SL2 is this possible without going through the apps ?  what happen if its is not tethered to the apps.

I have the SL and looking into buying the SL2 but was put off by the lack of the GPS function.

In theory, yes. There is a beta function in Fotos that is supposed to maintain a Bluetooth connection between your phone and your camera even when the app is not directly connected to or controlling the camera.  In practice? The functionality is slow to connect and failures greatly outnumber successes.  I find that perhaps one out of ten of my photos are correctly tagged.  Maybe as it shifts from a beta function to general release it will improve.  I can force it by connecting and then disconnecting, but it is faster and more reliable to just take an iPhone pic at the same time and then cut and paste coordinates later.

I have the SL and even though the GPS option is on, not all of my photos have the GPS coordinates. I assume this is because sometimes I take the shot before a GPS lock is achieved.

For this reason I stopped relying solely on the SL’s built in GPS. Alongside I also use an iPhone with Geotag Photos 2 app. The GPX file from it gets synced to Dropbox and I apply the coordinates to all photos in Photo Mechanic (skipping any photos that already have coordinates). Once all my photos have been tagged, I move to Capture One for editing.

This approach has an advantage that if I shoot with my Leica Q as well, all photos have GPS coordinates regardless.
