Quick update: All fixed! :)

I was quoted £120 for a fix by a very reputable repairers here in the UK, and £20 from my son (who's reputation does precede him, but for other reasons). I trust my son implicitly (when it doesn't involve using his hammer), and... he's fixed it. He also ironed out a slight focus stickiness issue, so the focus is running beautifully too! 'Pics or it didn't happen' attached. What a lad.

Yep, as suspected, the front barrel was previously repositioned incorrectly by approx 90°. He’s taken it apart and positioned correctly (and cleaned up some gunk to help the focus run more smoothly). The web page I referenced earlier with deconstruction steps was very helpful.

So it sounds like you're happy with your solution and I think that's the most important thing. That said, here's a photo of the original real-deal TT&H Summarit compared to my recently CLA'd (YYe Camera, Feb 2020) ltm mounted via a period correct genuine Leica LTM to M adapter. Note the positions of the screws. I'd love to hear what the reasoning is behind the design. Maaayyyybe it's somehow related to the early bayonet style hood that came before the tension fit later Xoons shade. I'm grasping at straws on this one though. Enjoy your lens!

I've just sent my new to me 5cm Summarit off to Newton Ellis with exactly the same problem. A seemingly clean example of the lens, but with a front barrel 90 degrees out of position - presumably fiddled with at some point in the past. I've had good experience with Newton Ellis in the past, and I'm hopeful of a satisfactory outcome this time too.
