Rokkor Posted May 24, 2020 Share #1 Posted May 24, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, I had a look yesterday at the Q1 and the CL & 23mm. the idea would be to use the camera all purpose especially for travelling (street, people, some scenery and architecture). I really liked the Q overall. Especially the Bokeh with f1.7. Very nice rendering. And second hand it is very attractive package prizewise. I also tried head & shoulder portraits and head portraits and wonder how your experience is shooting people portraits. Is the crop possibility feasable for shooting portraits? Do I understand correctly that if I crop on a Q to 35mm the image is the same as on a CL23mm without crop or also in the X100F (23mm APS-C)? It would be great to hear your thoughts as with the 28mm I find the angle a bit too wide, but wonder if stepping back and cropping would help and solve that. Or would it be better to go for the X100V or the CL with 23mm? I included a picture as an example but my question is even more in the direction of head portrait. Thanks a lot for your opinion in advance. Regards, Patrick
Advertisement Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 Hi Rokkor, Take a look here Leica Q Focal Length Portraits / Crop (vs APS-C 23mm). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johntobias Posted May 24, 2020 Share #2 Posted May 24, 2020 I had a CL with 18. It was too wide for head shots as distortion crept in, you will find the 23 better but if you are planning ANY other focal lengths, the CL is a no-brainier....a great camera. However, I wanted to cut my gear and raise my crop options so a Q2 filled the bill perfectly, cropped to 35 it is great for headshots and still is pretty high res ...I just shoot raw and then always have the max data to crop in post but the frame lines are very useful....almost an M like shooting experience. just my £0.02 worth fact is , both are fabulous cameras 👍😇😀😀😀
Rokkor Posted May 24, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted May 24, 2020 Hi John Tobias, thanks a lot. Can see your point. For the CL I would consider a 23mm and a body second hand. The L alliance might bring more affordable lenses. congrats to your Q2. That is a fantastic camera and with the MPs you can crop a lot. Do you have some public examples of portraits? seems a lot of people who have the Q or Q2 are very convinced. I know it is a compromise but since I like people portraits a lot, I would not like to get into too much wide angle, even though 1.7 and bokeh are truly great. Curious to hear other Q/Q2 users experiences. Seems not many would see a x100v more versatile. And I still think Q 35mm crop is less wide than 23mm APSC (35mm equivalent). But maybe I am wrong in my assumption.
