Stevejack Posted February 12, 2024 Share #712 Posted February 12, 2024 On 12/29/2023 at 8:52 PM, Ken Abrahams said: After a few months with this 28 Summilux lens I have come to the conclusion that I am very happy with its abilities. I am shooting Street from the hip at f1.4 which is pretty crazy considering the depth of field. I do have a few disappointments (fails) however when I get the distance exactly right, the results are amazing. In previous years I have been using the 21 SEM, 35 Summicron Asp and the 35 Summilux. Moving to the 28 has been a relief from my long held 35 mm perspective. I was already using the 21 in preference to the 35 Summilux because of its smaller barrel size suiting the angle of the camera sitting at my side. My hit rate was also increasing with the 21 lens. The move to 28 was a no brainer considering the cropping factor is less compared to the 21 SEM. I wouldn't recommend starting this method of shooting with a 1.4 lenses however. There is great benefit of having some success with ones images and be able to endure the continual practicing process to perfect the method. The best lens I have found for shooting from the hip is the 35 Summicron. Once again for its barrel size and the angle it can sit comfortably on my shoulder bag, at my side. I am having to readjust the length of my shoulder bag with different camera straps so the camera looks most comfortable while achieving the best angle to subjects up to 2.5 metres away. This image was shot with the M Monochrom camera however the M10M is (and probably the M11M) are better tools for the job. Once establishing a rhythm on the street with changing exposures and approaching the subject, the only other problem is rolling shutter. Welcome, dear visitor! You're absolutely right about the rolling shutter. The implementation of their e-shutter is such a mis-step.. I can only assume they couldn't physically fit a stacked sensor in there, because stacked sensors have been around for years and the e-shutter Leica chose is just not useable for street photography. You can't capture anything close to a 'decisive moment' with it.... It's silent, sure, but mostly useless on the street. If space limitations are the issue, I don't hold much hope that the M12 will have a better e-shutter unless they go with a global shutter instead.

Gidday Steve The faster electronic shutter speeds for me are with the SL2 and Sl2S. The rolling shutter isn't too bad with street, depending on how you shoot a standing subject or a subject moving against my speed. I wouldn't say the shutter makes the camera unusable for Street. The M10M hasn't got the electronic shutter and I am using ND filter to be able to utilise the 28 at 1.4. It's better with electronic shutter in my view because I keep forgetting to take the ND filter off when I am shooting something else. It's very nice when the f1.4 shot is sharp and I do get them. The lens is set between 1.5 m and 2 metres. I can slow my walking when approaching subject or just shoot anyway - ahh its pretty hard yes. 😄 I am shooting Hybrid shutter now, usually with the SL2S and when it's on a tripod switch to electronic to avoid exposure vibrations. Best Ken Thanks Ken, I think I forgot that I was in the 28mm thread, still thinking I was in the M11 thread 😅 I'll have to give the e-shutter another shot for street, I've used a stacked sensor since 2017 so testing the e-shutter implemented on the M11 in 2022 was a real shock and I haven't really used it since. No big deal but as you say, f/1.4 without an ND filter or for silent shooting it can be handy to have! Back to 28mm - I've only just picked up this focal length so it's been great browsing through this thread and getting some inspiration and it's nice to see your aussie street shots! Hoping to use 28mm more as a daily lens going forward.

When it came out it was highly regarded and now the SL Summicrons have taken the "Leica Crown". It's pretty much on a camera all the time here Steve, although it's hard to choose between that and the 35 Summilux, the 21 SEM and the SL Apo 35 Summicron when using an SL. 😃 I wonder if the bigger sensor of the M11 has made rolling shutter worse? Its less noticeable with Street work until it isn't Ken

Its less noticeable with Street work until it isn't Ken It's funny I've really not used my 35mm Summicron much the last few years., even though I enjoy that focal length. I really like the 50mm for portraits and being out with the kids, but when I do want wider I tend to want to be wider than 35mm. I enjoy the WATE quite a bit, and thought hard about picking up the 21 SEM for a while. The 24mm Summilux is a brilliant lens, I use it with the kids mostly but I find it just a tad wide for portraits. I was pretty set on the 28mm Elmarit but since I really enjoy the 24mm wide open I broke down and decided to give the 28 1.4 a go with thoughts to sell the 24 + 35mm lenses. Like yourself, everyone who has the 28/1.4 seems to love it. Time will tell so I'll let you know how it all went in a few months 😂
