IR Filters & Coding Help for Newbie

I just got my M8s yesterday and the Leica rep happened to be at the store (Kenmore Camera in Seattle area). He talked with me about the IR filters and stated that Leica is recommending their usage on ALL lenses, not just the wides. He also mentioned that as a rep for B+W as well, he originally used the B+W filters but has seen a fairly significant improvement with the Leica filters.

I have spent much time searching this site trying to get the latest thinking on the IR filter s and the coding as it pertains to CV lenses. Unfortunately, there are many disparate threads and it is very hard to find a definitive answer. Here are the lenses that I will be using:

CV 12mm

CV 21mm (P version)

CV 28 f1.9

CV 35mm f1.7

CV 50mm f1.5

Leica 90mm f2.8

Leica 135mm f2.8

I can't seem to find a list showing the recommended codes for the CV lenses (Leica, yes, CV, no).

Can we gather the latest info on the filter recommendations and the lens coding into a sticky or at least a link to someone else's site?

Also, any specific recommendations as to filter usage for my lenses would be really appreciated.

Just as a postscript, I have noticed some strange behavior in one of my bodies (both upgraded to latest firmware):

1. When upgrading, I used the same SD card with the upgrade file but on the second body, when I turned it on, nothing. I reseated the card but same thing. I ended up taking the battery out-in and then reformatting the SD and copying the file on to it again and this time the upgrade worked.

2. At one point when in the Set menu, the red rectangle showing the current parameter choice rapidly cycled through the screen from top to bottom repeatedly. Power on-off fixed it.

3. At least once so far, I've found that a parameter will have changed. Typically ISO value.

I'll report anything else as I find it but I'm going to have to consciously note which body is which. When I shot with my two R-D1s, I called one Henri (HCB) and the other Robert (Doisneau) and had folders names as such on my laptop to avoid the duplicate file name issues. It would be really nice if the firmware would allow us to preface character(s) in the file names.

Cheers,

Simon

Well, I just realized that the CV codes are indeed on Carsten's list... my apologies!

I am still hoping for some feedback on the latest thinking on the IR filters though (specifically, are they recommended for all lenses, or only the wides?)

I assume you've been to Carsten's Lens Codes?

The coding of the 12mm is kind of moot - the nearest you'll find is the WATE. For the others the normal approach is to code the lenses to the nearest Leica equivalent. For longer lenses there's virtually no processing required anyway so it's more of an EXIF exercise than filter correction.

For colour shooting it's definitely worth using filters on all lenses because the UV/IR effect isn't limited to just artificial 'blacks' but also has an effect on foliage and general colour rendering overall IMHO.

Beyond 35mm I doubt that you'll see any difference between using the Leica UV/IR filters and B+W/Heliopan. That might help you with availability and cost.

Thanks, guys, that helps.

Graham, are you saying that over 35mm I could use the B+W instead of the Leica filters? Are you saying that based on the cyan drift being more prominent in wides 35mm and below and therefore the Leica filters aren't going to "bring anything to the picnic"? With the two bodies I get 4 free filters and I'm sure the B+Ws will be less expensive than the Leicas, so that would certainly help!

The M8 deletes the firmware file from the SD card after it completes the upgrade. That's why it wouldn't work with the second camera. To avoid this set the write protect switch on the card to "protect" before you do the upgrade.

I've found for predictable color you need to use IR filters under all circumstamces. I've only ever seen a difference between the Leica and B+W filters when used on wide angles. The decision point is probably less than 35mm - it's hard to tell though but the difference is very noticeable with the WATE.

Bob.
