Locked SD Cards

Hmm, I have never seen this problem myself, neither with my Ultra II or my Extreme III. I wonder if it is related to the O/S used on the computer you use. I am using a Mac. Are the people having the problem using Macs or Windows computers, or a mix?

I know that Windows dumps some files on the card if you do certain actions, like click on an image and see Windows' preview. I wonder if this is related to the errors with the M8.

I am using Windows and I am also using LightRoom to upload the images.

I had a similar problem with a Sandisk 1gb SD card.

I tried to have it formatted on different XP machines, on two different Mac OSX machines, nothing helped. But! I inserted in into my new Vista machine, and Vista identified the problem right away and fixed it in 5 seconds!

What was the problem that Vista identified?

Just a suggestion.

I realize that this might be a problem that Leica needs to address, but in the meantime, if you're having this type of problem try formatting the card on another camera rather than a computer(?). A DSLR, or even a P&S perhaps. This has successfully revived a card I was having a problem with, and once reformatted on the "surrogate" camera I was able to reformat it successfuly on the M8.

Interesting

I had the 'SD locked card thing' off and on for two weeks in early September - after three months of no problem shooting. Then - everyone of my nearly new cards was deemed as 'locked' by my M8

I seem to have fixed this issue by cleaning the card contacts with iso-alcohol. No problem since. I surmise the SD reader on the M8 is very sensitive and was having trouble making a good contact with the sd card contacts. I have posted this on another thread as well - just can't remember right now

I am using Lexar 2 GB 133x cards

hope this helps

I had a problem with a card doing this once, but have not been able to repeat it.

HOWEVER, I have noted that when I have odd problems with the M8, it is usually because the battery display is showing the last segment.

Since I have adopted the behavior of changing the battery when the final segment shows, I have had no funny problems with my M8.
