tjphoto Posted August 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone know why all my SD cards are locked? I haven't done anything to lock them as far as i know. I didn't move the little switch to the locked position. Thanks, Tim Tim Jones Photography

carstenw Posted August 10, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 10, 2007 In the camera or in the computer? If the camera, try removing the battery and re-inserting it, and if that doesn't work, leave it out overnight.
egibaud Posted August 10, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2007 Hi, I had this problem with one Lexar Pro card. I bought 2 cards, one was fine, the other one said locked although it was not. I formated it in my computer then it did not say locked anymore, and then reformated in the camera. No problem since. Eric
steve_l Posted August 10, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 10, 2007 "SD locked" actually seems to be a pretty commom M8 response to a variety of situations - whenever it gets confused..

mat_mcdermott Posted August 10, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2007 I've had this happen a couple times, the camera thinking the card was locked even though I just unlocked it. Taking it out, locking it and unlocking it again solved it. Sometimes I've had to do it a couple of times, but it always rights itself.
tjphoto Posted August 12, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted August 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nothing seems to work. I unlocked it, and formatted card with disk utility on my mac. This could be the problem. When i try formatting the card by erasing, disk utility parttions instead. Anybody else have this problem?
Ecaton Posted August 12, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 12, 2007 Had the same issue several times. Taking the card out and locking-unlocking it, always fixed the problem. However, I always take a second card with me, even for a short walk with M8, since one never knows.............
Iron Flatline Posted August 12, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 12, 2007 I have one card that used to be in my D-Lux 3 that I wanted to use in my M8. It always said "Locked." At one point it actually allowed me to format it... but then it said "Locked" again. I'm glad I'm no the only one, and I hope they find a solution soon. I bought a new additional card, but as everything digital-Leica now I'm nervous that at some point it might simply randomly decide to lock up again. carstenw Posted August 12, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 12, 2007 If someone has a card which they can't use because the M8 says it is locked, may I suggest that they send it to Leica? Perhaps we will see a fix in the next firmware version.
tjphoto Posted August 12, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted August 12, 2007 Ahhh sure, that wouldn't take too long.. But, don't known what else to do . I ordered a couple 4 GB transend cards the other day and i hope this will be the end of my problems. 4GB for 57.00 US dollars! Almost the same as DVDs, never thought i would see it. pascal_meheut Posted August 12, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 12, 2007 I had the problem with 2 Transcend 2Gb card. I stupidly throw the first one away. I had the 2nd one working again by formatting it in the DMR. Formatting it with the Mac did not work though.
tjphoto Posted August 14, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted August 14, 2007 It happened again today. I off loaded my card onto the desk top and put it in the m8. The camera said " Card Locked" . I put it in my new 1d mk iii and formatted it, and it worked just fine. Should i send in the camera and card? Is it worth the bother? I would really stink if i didn't have other cameras to format it with.

arthury Posted August 14, 2007 Share #16 Posted August 14, 2007 I used the M8 for more than 6months with firmware upgrades installed every time they are released and I had no such errors until this latest firmware. With this latest firmware, I can re-create this "SD card locked" error at will. Here's how I re-produce the issue: Just pull out the SD card after populating it with images stick it into a card-reader (SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1) & upload all the images to your computer pull out the card and stick it back into the M8 turn on the M8 hit the PLAY button And, you'll get the error. I did not have a single error in my last firmware using this method above. How do I get rid of it? Switch off/on the M8 or Re-format the SD card Something is going on with this new firmware that controls the Play button.
arthury Posted August 14, 2007 Share #17 Posted August 14, 2007 I lied ... After I re-formatted the SD card, I just tried the steps again and I cannot reproduce the error. I was consistently reproducing the errors in the last 4-5 times I used the M8 but those were before the re-format operation. Welcome, dear visitor! I do that all the time and I have not seen this with 2 M8's running 1.107 firmware or any previous version. But I use Lexar cards. The one sandisc card I have I did have it read as Locked but it was Locked. I had loaded the 1.107 firmware on it and then locked it so when I updated one of the M8's it could erase the firmware. When I took it out of the first M8 and tried top update the second that M8 reported the card as Locked. Evern after I unlocked it the second M8 wouldn't see the 1.107 on it. I had to format it and then re-copy the firmware to it to do the update on the second M8.

bayerische Posted August 14, 2007 Share #20 Posted August 14, 2007 I had a similar problem with a Sandisk 1gb SD card. I tried to have it formatted on different XP machines, on two different Mac OSX machines, nothing helped. But! I inserted in into my new Vista machine, and Vista identified the problem right away and fixed it in 5 seconds!
