mat_mcdermott Posted August 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) As of two days ago the battery meter on my M8 has been showing only three-quarters battery charge even though the battery has fully gone through its cycle on the charger. It first occured after the camera was accidentally left on in my bag for a couple of hours and the battery was completely drained (how this happened with the auto-off set to 5 min. is unknown). The next morning I completely charged the battery, but the camera still says it only is three-quarters full. I shot for several hours yesterday (+/- 2GB) without the battery meter changing, so I think the battery is probably fully charged but is being incorrectly read by the camera. I reinstalled the latest firmware, to no avail. It's been really hot and humid here in New York of late and the place where the battery is charged is not air-conditioned. Don't know if this could be cause or contributing factor. Any thoughts on cause or cure?

carstenw Posted August 9, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 9, 2007 Set the camera not to turn off automatically, turn on the LCD screen, showing a picture, and leave the camera overnight. In the morning, the battery and camera should have reset themselves, and a new charge should return to normal.
mat_mcdermott Posted August 9, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted August 9, 2007 I'll try that. Thanks.
Knorp Posted August 9, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 9, 2007 Hi Matthew, I had the same problem with my first battery, but I had it exchanged for a new one because draining it didn't help. But it's best to take Carsten's advice first, you never know. Good luck.
Albert4321 Posted August 9, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 9, 2007 I just had the same problem of left the M8 power on for a few hrs in the bag. same question: What happen to the 5 min auto off?
carstenw Posted August 10, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2007 When the camera is on, a slight press on any button will wake it up. Chances are that something pressed the shutter slightly, from time to time, not allowing the camera to sleep. It also doesn't last as long on as off, even when it sleeps. Leica has something to learn here.
mat_mcdermott Posted August 10, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted August 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Carsten, the overnight battery drain worked. The meter is now displaying correctly. Thanks.
Shootist Posted August 10, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 10, 2007 Carsten, the overnight battery drain worked. The meter is now displaying correctly. Thanks. Is this a REAL Leica M8 battery? I had a problem with a aftermarket battery and the company I bought it from sent me a new one as a replacement. Funny but the replacement does the same thing. The only time the meter on the M8 shows full, right after a charge cycle, is when I let that battery drain completely in the M8. Even if I use it until only 1 bar on the M8 is showing and then recharge it the M8 only shows 1 bar with this aftermarket battery. I haven't had that happen with REAL Leica batteries. I have put this aftermarket battery aside and will only use it IF, for some reason, I use up my other 3 REAL Leica batteries. Giving my shooting style and time I go out to do some shots I doubt that will ever happen.
