sincurves Posted January 7, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 7, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’m about to decide on a camera to be used both in and out of studio. The SL2 is top of my list, however I would appreciate any experiences from using it in studio. How well does the EVF work in low/model light? Is the tethering stable and quick? How does it render skin tones? I’m used to Hasselblad colors and hoping for something not too far off. Thanks in advance! Jan.
Advertisement Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 Hi sincurves, Take a look here SL2 in studio. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wjdrijfhout Posted January 7, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 7, 2020 In my experience, the SL2 has not been an ideal fit for tethering. Capture One does not support tethering with SL, so I use the work-around of tethering to Leica Image Shuttle (proprietary Leica software) en setting a hot-folder in C1. You get used to it, but recently I added a Fujifilm GFX to my kit, which tethers very well with C1, and that really is a breath of fresh air in comparison. Add the articulating screen and Profoto flash support, and the GFX is a much more compelling studio option. SL2 does tether with Lightroom, but many people have complained here about the stability of the connection. EVF is wonderful, and no problems using it in low light or modelling light. rsmphoto Posted January 7, 2020 Share #3 Posted January 7, 2020 (edited) That's not my experience. I've now used the SL2 tethered on two full day location shoots with a 2016 MacBook Pro and both shoots were flawless - not a hiccup. I use LIS for SL2 with a hot folder to LR Classic connecting with a TetherTools cable. As for speed of transfer/rendering in LR , I'd say about 5-6 sec for the image to render in LR using that setup. I suspect the new 2019 MacBook Pro might be a bit quicker for seeing the image rendered. Let me add that I'm not using Catalina. I'm still running Mojave. There have been people here discussing tethering issues with the latest Catalina update, 10.15.2, although 10.15.1 was said to be stable. rsmphoto Posted January 8, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 8, 2020 (edited) One minor and probably obvious addition. I shoot architecture and move each time between shots. I find that shutting down the camera before disconnecting the cable from the computer when moving to the next location seems to keep everything working right (LIS for SL2 and LR Classic remain open on computer), so when setting up for next shot all I need to do is reconnect cable and power up the camera. Obviously this doesn't really apply to studio work, but might prove useful still. Edited January 8, 2020 by rsmphoto
