Ordered M8, 50lux & WATE - PhotoVillage vs PopFlash

I ordered the M8 Chrome, pre-ordered the WATE, magnifier, battery, LCD protector, SD cards and a Luigi half case from the Photo Village this am. I emailed Rich questions over the weekend since I am new to Leica. Great responses to my emails thru out the weekend. The only item I want and they don't have is the A&A reporter bag in leather.

Since PhotoVillage does not have any 35/1.4 or 50/1.4, I ordered a chrome 50 lux + IR-cut filter from PopFlash. the experience is even better. For one, I can do it via payPal and don't need to deal with CC # & address over the phone.

I wish I saw Guy's thread regarding the Summarit, I would have gotten a couple of the Summarit instead. But life is short, get fast lens.

I learned a lot from the forum. The reason I jump the gun is seeing the landscape thread and the price increase thread. So reading is forum is very dangerous.

anyway, I will post feedback from my orders later this week. I have 2 wedding gigs this Sat and Sun. It should be fun. My worst nightmare is to shoot the whole wedding with my lens cap on. I have never shot RF before.

Please post any test report on the Summarits when available, I am specially interested in the 35mm, and 90mm comparing to the 90mm f/2 APO.

Thanks,

If your camera starts counting up to 30 and then back down again, it's a good bet your lens cap is on! After a while, you'll get a feel for when the cap is on, or when the shutter speed dial is in the wrong place, by the shutter sound/feel.

Just look to the bottom of the viewfinder every time you bring the camera up to your eye and press the shutter release slightly. If you see a flashing 32" you have forgotten to take the lens cap off. Very simple.

Good advise. Thanks all!

I guess Leica figured out I am not the only one will have the lens cap on problem.

BTW, got email from PopFlash regarding the tracking #, I should have it by Wed. I ordered 2nd day shipping instead of overnight. I am cheap.

Also, Got a call from PhotoVillage, my M8 appeared to come in a day earlier (I also ordered 2nd day shipping) (or may be a day later as I was busy at work not paying attention what he said) They also want to sell me the 35/1.4 blk or 35/2 in chrome as I requested a 35/1.4 in chrome earlier. I understand they don't make 35lux in chrome anymore, PopFlash does have a used 35/1.4 in chrome if anyone interested.

Hi Sol - only if you have it on aperture priority - if you're being a smart-arse and have it on manual it obeys you and produces nice black pictures.

I always check the first shot on the LCD these days.

Jono, I can picture the scene: being an expert rangfinder shooter, I dial in shutter speed without looking in the viewfinder and shoot directly into the cap! I'm almost positive I'll do it at the most inopportune time.

My favorite is when my girlfriend decides there's an urgent spontaneous photo waiting to be taken somewhere and starts going "hurry up!" while I focus, dial in aperture...and shoot the lens cap.

Really guys it not that hard, once you get use to looking at the meter LED's. Even with the camera in full manual mode if you leave the lens cap on the left arrow will flash telling you there is way to little light. I have checked this setting the camera to 8000 and pointing it at a dark area of my house. The arrow doesn't start flashing until I stop down to f/16. So if it's flashing you have the lens cap on.

Are you sure you want to shoot two weddings with a camera you have only had for two days, especially if you have never used a rangefinder before?

LOL!! Typical UK understatement :)

Albert--I'm assuming you're not JUST shooting M8s at that wedding, right? :) If you've never used a rangefinder, well, I wouldn't want to learn on the client's nickel, so to speak.

@ Imants--yes, it does take all kinds ;)

Anyway, I'm interested in how they turn out! ;)

Jamie,

It's not for me to tell Albert his business, but it seems like an insane idea, to me.

OTOH, he could have been incredibly lucky, and got invites to two weddings as a guest this weekend, and is using the opportunity to experiment with his brand new kit. Can't say that I have ever been to two weddings in a weekend though :)

yes, two paid wedding gigs. One in Los Gatos winery, one in Calistoga. So I will only have four hrs sleep on Saturday night.

I test shot with the M8 with my three year old daughter the first day I got the M8 + 50lux (this Wednesday), walking with two dogs + leach on each of my hand. It took me about 2 mins to get used to where to put my finger to focus. While my dogs pulling me left and right, I shot wide open at my hi-energy daughter running around and trying focus tracking and pre-focus. I took about 10 shots and nailed 8 of them in term of focusing, beginner's luck perhaps. Man this lens is sharp. I then put my M8 in my bag ever since, charge my 2nd battery, updated firmware and ready for my weddings. I guess shooting 2 yr with my 4x5 exclusively for my school projects years ago gave me good training, at least for patient and muscle.

I will shoot with my 5D + 1.2L mkII, 1D2 + 16+35L as my basic setup, along with my ND + 17-37 which I have not used for a while. Since both wedding are outdoor hi-end venues, I would love to shoot the zeiss 17-35mm, best super-wide zoom lens in the world. I will shoot with my partner. So I am not worried. my main goal is to replace the 5D 85L with my M8 + 50lux (or eventually a 75 cron.). If things go well, my 2nd goal is to replace with my 1D2 or wiill be 1D3 with a 2nd M8 with the WATE. I have pre-order the WATE Monday right before it went up to $5400.

So I will walk in to the bride's room with my M8 and one of my Canon, perhaps 5D + 24-70L and see how the days go. 1D2 + 70-200/2.8 + my M8 for ceremony. I may be able to shoot the entire reception with my M8, ops, no flash. Don't want to deal with the Alien Bees and pocket wizards at the pt with my Leica

I will then sell my ND, 17-35, 24-85, 70-300, 50mm shortly to raise fund for more leica stuff. Keeping my Contax 645 and its 5 lenses in case I move up to digital back.
