I hate to rain on anyone’s parade, but when I look at these photos I don’t say to myself - WOW, they must have been taken with the rare, 35 Summillux AA; I must buy one!

At a push, I might tell the difference between images taken with a number of 35s in controlled conditions - but I’d be as likely to get some of them wrong ...

In 1991 my Leica dealer (who had figured out my likelyhood to buy new special lenses) called to say he had a copy of the new 35 1.4 AA coming in and would I like it and I said yes. After only one roll of film I adored the lens and for some bizarre and unknown reason I asked him to order me a second copy thinking I would use one and save the other for down the road. It took 11 months for the second copy to arrive and now here it is down the road, and I have thoroughly enjoyed these lenses on both my film bodies and digital up to including my M10M, and in my eyes I still prefer the rendering of the AA to the new FLE and every other Leica 35mm lens. In person, and in prints I can see a difference in the rendering both in the in-focus area and through the transition out of the focal plane into the out of focus area, it possesses a more unique fingerprint not unlike some of my other more special older lenses yet actually a look unique to this lens. I just wish more copies had been made so that more people could enjoy it.

I must confess, I’m not a huge fan of the 35mm field of view (having had the 35 Summicron ASPH, two FLEs and now a pre-asph) - but, that aside my humble skills have confirmed for me that I’m more moved by composition (including depth of field), and distracted by overly processed images, than I am by the subtleties of a lens or processor with an image viewed in isolation.  Perhaps that’s just me.

Went shopping today. The weather was nice. So I brought my 35AA with me and took quite a few shots on my M-P.

Here is one I like. Wide open, with CPL and 4x -2 filter.

In theory I do... but it's only been a few hours, and it is being shipped to me right now. This is all part of my Holy Grail search. I might have finally found my "minimalist" kit.

Can you share with us your minimalist kit?

My minimalist kit is:

Leica M-E220 + Summicron 28 v1
