Shootist Posted August 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well after reading Guy's thread about happy M8 owners and posting about my front focusing black M8 I finally got a break in the skies here in Atlanta to take the camera out and check the infinity focus. Guess what, when all lenses were set to the infinity mark the RF overlay image was to the left of the actual target and turning the focusing ring back to a closer focus point brought the image back into alignment. So out came the 2mm allen key and after about 3 adjustment I got it as best as I can. This is the first time I have even though of adjusting the rangefinder on any of my M8's. I was always under the impression that anyone trying to do rangefinder adjustments themselves (other then verticle alignment on the older models) was daft. Little did I know. Checked it with 3 different lenses at varying distances and it seems to focus fine now. I'm going out to do some real world shots this morning for a test. Leica told me if my 75mm lux or cron and the 90mm apo where on the money than the rest should follow since these are what they consider very tight tolerences. So having known that and my long glass was good , i ran some tests and my 50 lux was out so that went in for a shim and came back on the money. I sent the 135mm apo also but the did not have the right shim for it so when that comes in i will send it back but i needed it for runway so i cheated a little and just front focused. Olsen Posted August 5, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2007 Guy, I have received my 50 mm 1,0 Noctilux back from coding and bayonet exchange at Solms, but it is still backfocusing on my M8 with about 10 cm at 2 meters distance. To me the most important lenses at shooting wide open are from 50 up or the most critical , that's the direction i have taken and make sure my 50, 75 and 90 are on the money, now if you have 4 lenses good and one not than may consider sending that in for a adjustment. i think we expect to much in the critical area of focusing when using RF. The tolerence on that roller ball are tight and like being married you have to make some compromises or you will just be fighting this all the time. Since I adjusted the wheel on the black M8 the 50 and 90 are what I would call within tolerance on both the chrome and black. The 75 now back focuses the same amount on both. If I turn the focus ring to the front side of In Focus it is OK. I took this yesterday with the black, f/5.6 IIRC, hand held at the closest focusing distance. I swayed in and out to get the correct focus. This image is curves adjusted and some USM applied. Oh and I blured the background slightly. [ATTACH]48599[/ATTACH] I like the 75 so much that I really don't want to send it in and be without it for X months. Maybe if I buy a 75/2.5 Summarit (when they become available) I'll send the Cron in for adjustment. By the way I really can't tell if the 35/28/24/21 backfocus or not. It's amazing to me how everything will "fall into place" once you get the right calibration. All the lenses I have now seem to be fine, with the exception of my 75 lux still front focusing a weeee bit wide open near the close range limit (can't see it at all past f2). Hi guys, Same problem here Jamie! exactly the same problem with 75lux and my chrome M8, it front focus at wide open, and it's still noticeable till f4 may you post a picture to indicate the ring that I should fine-tune to solve the front/back focus problems?
