280mm is longish in my book.

For quasi-static subjects, and if you manage to hand-hold the 'rig' fairly stable, IBIS can help a lot. ON S1R, I can successfully hand-hold the rather large Nikkor 400mm f2.8E at eg 1/30 sec or 1/60 sec, which is next to impossible without stabilisation. I dont think I could do any better with the Nikon D5 or D850. For moving targets, I would certainly chose eg D5+400mm.
