KM-25 Posted August 3, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had a great first day with my new M8, I shot from about 5PM to 9:30 and got some nice stuff, no back focus issues. But... I can not use iView with the M8 DMG files, it crashes the app every time. I did the firmware upgrade, I am not sure what to do since this has been my primary data asset manager for years, I have nearly 500,000 images nicely cataloged with it. Any idea what to do here? I can not use the M8 in a full force production workflow until I get it figured out.
Advertisement Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Hi KM-25, Take a look here M8 DNG files crash iView on upload. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gareth_c Posted August 3, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2007 I know its probably an obvious question but have you checked for iView updates?
stunsworth Posted August 3, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2007 I use iView and the M8 and don't have any problems, however I don't import the M8 items dirrectly - explanation below. If you have a genuine registered copy of iView you should have received an email allowing you to download Mocrosoft Expression which is the Microsoft branded version of iView now that they have bought the product. If you haven't received this get into contact with Microsoft - you should be able to find the relevant email address on the Expression support page. Anyhow, why I don't import directly - and a solution to your problem. The DNG files from the M8 only contain a medium sized image preview. This I found to be too small to be of any use and iView/Expression is incapable of generating a full sized preview. What I do is run all my M8 DNG files though the Adobe DNG converter and tell it to generate DNGs with a full sized preview. These then import correctly into iView/Expression. This is a pain, but I suspect I'll have to continue to do this until Expression supports M8 DNGs correctly. One thing that may be of importance, once the files have been through the DNG convertor they won't open up in C1. ACR is ok, as you''d expect. I never had iView crash with M8 DNGs, the only problem was the small preview image. Are you sure you haven't reached the maximum number of items in a catalogue? Can't remember what it is I'm afraid. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other question.
cocker Posted August 3, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 3, 2007 Iview (or its successor Expression) is NOT compatible with M8 DNG's as they come out of the camera. There are some threads about this on the forum. I think you can run the DNG's through the Adobe DNG converter in some way and then use them in Iview - but then there are reportedly some difficulties in using them with capture I. Personally I use Bridge in CS3 to view and sort and I've never understood why anyone preferred Iview - but then vive la difference!
cocker Posted August 3, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 3, 2007 Steve got in first by 60 seconds with a much better explanation!!
hdrmd Posted August 3, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 3, 2007 My DNG files are compatible with iView straight out of the camera. Yes, they are small previews, but they will open in ACR directly from iView. I am using the latest Expression Media version of iView. Dr
guywalder Posted August 3, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) hey I'm glad this came up again, I had somehow missed that 3.1 now displays thumbnails. Not perfect, but a major improvement on not displaying any kind of image (or rather crashing!)
KM-25 Posted August 3, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted August 3, 2007 I know its probably an obvious question but have you checked for iView updates? My iView is up to date, I have Expression Media, but see no way to check for updates...
KM-25 Posted August 3, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted August 3, 2007 I use Bridge in CS3 to view and sort and I've never understood why anyone preferred Iview - but then vive la difference! Hmmm....I might have waited on getting the M8 had I known this was the case. iView is an extremely powerful tool for my on-the-road stock agency. I have some 6 GB of catalogs alone on my laptop that reference the exact location of some half a million photos... Maybe by the time iView / Expression does update the software to read M8 DNG's I will have overcome the 100GB backlog of archiving I have and I can then properly archive any and all M8 DNG files. iView is a LOT better data asset manager than anything out there due to the thumbnail catalogs alone... stunsworth Posted August 3, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 3, 2007 My DNG files are compatible with iView straight out of the camera. Yes, they are small previews, but they will open in ACR directly from iView.r Absolutely, but I like to edit my looking at the full screen previews and that won't be possible until either iView can create full sized previews, or Leica starts to imbed full sized previews in the DNG files. hdrmd Posted August 3, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 3, 2007 Steve: I suppose another possibility is to shoot both Jpeg and Raw, and preview the jPeg. DR
psquared Posted August 3, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 3, 2007 I find that M8 DNG files made by firmware 1.092 crash iView/Expression Media. With 1.102 and beyond, they work fine in the DAM software. My workaround for now was to convert all the 1.092 files to DNG + large preview jpg using Lightroom. I still save the original DNG files with a different extension (.DNG.org) so that Expression Media doesn't "see" them, just in case I want to process them with C1 later on. Now, if C1 v4 can process DNGs that Adobe re-processed, then that would be wonderful.
guywalder Posted August 3, 2007 Share #13 Posted August 3, 2007 Peter, I was beginning to think that the fact that I can now see thumbnails was due to a firmware update as well. I am sure I haven't done anyhthing to iView since I last tried unsuccessfully, that leaves the FW as the only thing that has changed. Guy
