colonel Posted October 4, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 4, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I couldn’t find one of these threads - apologies if one does exist .... I have been looking for a new SLR for some time. The AE1 was nice but fiddly to use. I like the concept of the Nikon system where you can use virtually any lens on any camera and enjoyed the FE2 a lot, especially with the lovey 50 1.2, but again, I didn’t gel with the interface. I tried the R6 but missed A mode and the chunky shutter was a little too noisy. The R8 and R9 are over my size threshold. So I found a R7 advertised in good condition with a lens (35-70) and went for it. So far it’s a real revelation. If you like an electronic shutter (I do) it’s the pinnacle of the traditionally shaped R series. The controls are just lovely and all in the right place, as well as having a nice hefty chunk to them. The loading mechanism is a bit odd but I guess it works. Also surprised about the 35-70 3.5-4.5 E60 version. After reading extensively I was surprised to find it full metal and extremely well made. Pretty good picture quality as well. Now why are second hand R lenses so expensive, is it the SL effect ??? Welcome, dear visitor! mmx_2 Posted October 5, 2019 Share #2 Posted October 5, 2019 The R7 is really nice camera! I also have one (and an R8), but it does not get the amount of use it deserves! regarding prices, actually most of the effect is people making movies with R-lenses that have driven up prices (on some) on lenses. There has been sort of a “cult” around the somewhat “cineastic look” created by some r-lenses (all the Summilux lenses are quite expensive). Not all lenses are expensive, summicron 50 is quite cheap (made in relative large numbers), also macro Elmarit 60 can be found at a reasonable cost. The vario elmar 70-210 (and 75-210) are generally quite cheap mainly because their performance is not “top notch”. They are not bad, just not as good as modern zooms. The later 80-200 f4 is really good but also more expensive. Some expensive lenses have actually fallen a bit in price. This might be due to a “negative SL-effect”. The 280f4 was crazy expensive at one point but has definitely fallen (I guess people but the SL-90-280 zoom) and also the Summilux 80 has gone back a bit (the SL primes are spectacular). But there is still demand for the R-lenses, and it might be somewhat difficult to find a “cheap” wide-angle for example.
masjah Posted October 5, 2019 Share #3 Posted October 5, 2019 Probably the "best value" wide-angle R is the 21-35 zoom. If you can live with the smaller aperture than the wide primes, it is a very good performer, and the going rate seems to be about £1500.
