shutter speed in view finder?

Buried in a thread about the new firmware I asked a question I'd like to repeat if you all don't mind. I very much want to be able to see the shutter speed in the viewfinder when manually adjusting exposure. I believe the M5 does this, and certainly the M8 "knows" the speed. Am I missing something? Personally this is the top of my wish-list for future firmwares updates.

I doubt you will ever see this in the M8, maybe M9. I too thought it would be nice to see the shutter speed in the viewfinder when using manual mode so I would know if it was to slow for the shot I was taking. But then I just set the shutter speed first to what I think the shot needs to come out right and then adjust the aperture to get the correct exposure. The only time I do it the other way is IF I am trying to get a shollow DOF.

Its not neccessary to see the shutter speed in the viewfinder, because you will check the photo in the display and there you can get all informations you want. Keep the viewfinder "clean" and dont try to let it become such a "dwarf cinema" as we knew it from all these other cameras.

Do you find it intrusive to see the shutter speed in AE mode? I sure don't. We shouldn't let tradition-habit go unchanged without good reason in my opinion. Sure you can get the speed of the last shot from the playback, and I have used this, but iI would benefit in many situations, to be able to rapidly dial a shutter speed never moving my eye from the finder.

If I'm shooting in AE, then seeing the shutter speed is useful. In manual exposure I know the shutter speed when I raise the camera and count the clicks to know what shutter speed I've selected. It isn't that difficult.

Anyhow we're not going to see an M8 with manual exposure that shows the shutter speed in the viewfinder. There aren't enough 'panels' in the LED display to do it in an easily readable way.

The placement of the various figures and symbols is determined by the tiny LED chip that sits on one of the finder masks (you can see it moving when you focus the lens). The various items are interspersed. So this is a hardware matter and cannot be changed by firmware. Having both the shutter speed figures and the manual exposure symbols on at the same time would result in an extremely cluttered readout when on manual!

This chip layout was taken over from the M6TTL. This is not to say that it would be difficult to design a modified chip with the figures and the symbols separated. They wouldn't take up much more space that way than they already do, and yes, I think it would be worthwhile to see the shutter speed in manual exposure. Especially as with this infinitely rotatable speed dial you cannot set the speed in darkness simply by counting from 'stop', which could be convenient. Also, because of the finer settings on it, we sometimes adjust a manual exposure with the speed dial instead of with the aperture ring (easily done on the M8 with the first finger on the shutter release and the second finger on the speed dial). — But we won't see this until the M8-2 at the earliest – if at all!

I quite liked the way the hexar RF did this, with the assigned speed showing as well as the current metered speed.

I'd be even happier with the assigned speed and a +/- EV annotation for the current metered speed. (ie, camera set to 1/250, but scene is +1.5 EV over that exposure).

either way, as lars said - it won't be in this version.

I can live with out the shutter speed in the viewfinder, but having a warning countdown when there are 5 or 10 frames left on a card would be very nice. It is easy for me to count 36 frames in film, but counting 190 for a 2gb card is tough.

We can all live with the M8 as it is now, I presume, but a) the M8 is what it is now partially because of discussions in this forum (the IR and banding issues), and B) further discussion is useful because any sensible manufacturer listens to feedback from users as long as it is well-informed and polite; flaming is counterproductive of course because flamers brand themselves as not serious. Some of the arguments on this forum do fall through on the point of a), but the tone is generally fairly civilized.

We can probably all dream up features that might be good to have or which would be useful considering our own personal working habits. Leica Camera AG however need to keep the camera simple and uncluttered, digitally as well as mechanically, and they know it. For several years I was a semi-serious long-range backpacker up in Lapland, which means that you carry the necessities of life on your back. You simply had to pare your load down; I did even create a computer application to do that! I think the ultimate was one crazy (or savvy) Finn who carried everything in a common plastic shopping bag. When it started to rain, he took off his clothes and put them in the bag, and put them on dry when the rain stopped. We do not have any Park Rangers up there north of the Arctic Circle – you are on your own. Now I do not suggest that Leica should go that far, metaphorically speaking, but it's the spirit that counts.
