colint544 Posted August 25, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wonder if anyone might have any insight into a small problem with my M2? It's my favourite film camera, and it gets used more than my M4 and M5. Mostly because it's the smoothest and quietest, with the best 35mm framelines, and it's just a joy to use. Kanto Camera in Japan fettled it and replaced some parts back in 2013. Anyway, a couple of shots into a roll of Portra yesterday, I noticed that the little metal stud next to the shot counter was missing. I've no idea what it's there for, but it's left a deep hole in the top plate. Can't see what's at the bottom of it. Can't find the stud anywhere, I'm presuming it's gone forever. I've put tape over the hole, in case it's going to let light into the camera. Before I start removing the film and shining a light into the hole, etc, has anyone ever had any experience of this? A very niche 'problem', I know. Cheers, Colin Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! The arrow is actually engraved onto the top plate. With the lens facing away from you, the arrow is just to the left of the metal stud. The tape I've clumsily put over the hole is covering the arrow as well. Kind of wondering what the little stud is for, anyway.

Jeff S Posted August 25, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 25, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) In the US, DAG will surely have a replacement part. Probably Sherry Krauter, too. In Europe, besides Leica, probably others like Will van Manen? Jeff

Nothing seems loose, but on a Leica, there's never anything superfluous. I knew that piece had to perform some function. What a font of knowledgeable people this forum is. Thank you again for your trouble, Colin
Jeff S Posted August 25, 2019 Share #9 Posted August 25, 2019 I actually had no idea... simply searched “Leica M2 top plate”, saw the video link, and fast scrolled it to see if he removed the part. I figured you were worth a few minutes, Colin, but thank that magical inter-web thingy! Jeff
Frase Posted August 25, 2019 Share #10 Posted August 25, 2019 Before you pay someone try contacting Leica direct as they may send you the part for free, I cracked the rangefinder illumination window on my M2 a few years ago and Leica sent me a replacement.
