I do not own the S1R yet and I have sold my SL couple of weeks ago.

So what is the hold back for a S1R you may ask? First I believe the time now should be close to the announcement of SL2 which I have made up my mind to go for it. second, I believe the specification and AF capability should be hairline close knowing that Panasonic has a hand in the development of the SL, especially in the AF system. I am not operating a stray dog salvation yard, so in the event that the SL2 comes with equally good AF tracking ability as the S1R and it comes with IBIS, I do not see the need for me to have a duplicate S1R around. The additional consideration would be the common flash protocol of SL2 and S1R although my hopes are not high ( although the past and present Leica V Lux uses the Panasonic flash protocol).

The article on AF Continuous Test  on S1R set to high drive, zone focus showed outstanding AF tracking ability of the S1R over 20 frames each with perfect focus nail on over flyby events. I am impressed as I’ve done a couple of flyby events in the past with SL set to only medium drive mode, AF-C, single point & dynamic tracking mode @ 1/2000 Sec shutter speed which I would typically get 60-70% sharply focused shots with the rest in soft focus as the camera struggles to get the subject in clear focus.

I know at first hand that jet planes flyby isn’t Driving Miss Daisy speed and the lighting situation in the sky can be tricky and challenging at times to fool and distract the camera’s AF.

btw using a PDAF Canon, Sony or Nikon does not warrant 100% successful AF sharp pictures, user capability to select the appropriate settings and environment lighting also dictates the end result.
