Recently I posted some photos taken in Tokyo in the Eighties in another thread here, now, let me continue with another set of photos which I made after sunset, in the evening or night. The scenery on the streets, the illuminated shops, eateries and drinking places and particularly the late night life in the vicinity of the stations were a photographer’s paradise, often more filthy than shady – it fascinated me!

The photos were taken with a M6 and the Summilux 1.4/35, a great, almost perfect lens for such conditions, usually on Fujifilm 400. The illumination was always a challenge, from inside the buildings fluorescent light with its greenish colour (I never used a filter), and outside, the often dominating warm red and orange illumination from lanterns and signboards. On top, high contrast, flares and halos. All photos I keep as prints in the size 20x30cm, the got scanned with a simple Canon Lide220 scanner at 300dpi with a little post processing in terms of colour balance, aligning and dust removing. Photos with a lot of grain I ran through Topaz Denoise first. The photos are no pieces of art, just plain documentation of the evening life in those days in a big city – there is not much change today.

So, let us start with the evening tour... near Shibuya station at the 109 shopping center
