leonpro Posted August 5, 2007 Share #21 Â Posted August 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I switched to a Mac years ago when they released their Mac OS 9. I found it the most stable OS compared to Windows at that time. I used to help assemble PCs for government, corporate and home users. Depending on their requirements, you needed to have the right hardware combination because one incompatible driver would throw the system off. And this drove me crazy. I kept on installing, re-installing and mixing hardware to find the most stable combination. (I'm sure the PC side has gone a long way from those days). Â But that's the reason why Apple computers had a reputation for working and being reliable back then because they monopolized their computers to ensure 110% reliability especially for post-production and graphics environment were computers were left on 24 hours a day. And that was the premium I was paying for at that time. The wonderful design was a great bonus. Â Now it's mostly about paying for the design and OS software. Because they can't charge a very high premium for internal components that are mass-produced for the PC side as well. Â Their move to Intel chips enticed more people to switch. To say you could come back and use Windows with the same machine, but to try out the OS X in the process. But I'm afraid Apple is becoming more these days as a "lifestyle" product like Bang and Olufsen with more hype in design and marketing rather than a serious product known for it's quality and hardware stability. Both of which I'm questioning these days on their computers. Â I have two computers which were both shipped pre-OS X and they haven't given me problems to date except for a very noisy hard drive which I'm sure will fail in time. Apart from that it's on 24 hours a day and stationed around the house for any guest to use. It's the newest one that is giving me problems with a motherboard and twice replaced processor (all under warranty). Â I'm glad I switched back then and will do it again in a heartbeat. But lately I question their motives as all they have left to brag about is their OS as all other internal components are most likely found in the PC side and, therefore, a mix mash of hardware unlike before where each component were carefully planned and produced specifically for Apple. Â ...Oh and to answer a few questions... ...highest memory possible that one can afford. It doesn't have to be Apple-branded with a simple sticker, but make sure it's high quality memory used by Apple like Micron, Simple Tech and especially Samsung. (Although all my memory is Apple up to 6GB thanks to scouring around eBay). Display is definitely STANDARD, not glossy. Faster hard drive with external FireWire 800 for files (or if on the road use, for back up).

d_lague Posted August 8, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted August 8, 2007 WHY? I cannot understand why you would want to switch. We have both and there is no way I would buy another Mac. Â They are just computers and the current PCs have many things that make them superiors to Macs. Windows XP is a marvelous operating system and all the photo software you will ever need is on the PC. Â Don't get me wrong....Macs are OK, but why switch?? Â WHY?
