Does the split image focus screen darken the view finder compared to the standard screen?

No it’s the same surface as the standard screen except that in the centre is a small split image circle with a micro prism collar.

I bought the microprism screen for my S2-P, I have never bothered to move it to my S(007)...

Yep John, I did exactly the same, getting the alternate screen for my S2. Different users shoot different ways of course. What works for someone shooting landscape or wide open lower light might be quite different to shooting fashion in studio for example. I think many of us recognise the limitations of the single AF point system but work with it accordingly. Different systems have different strengths of course. I don’t focus my S manually at all but have the rear button set for AFS, I shoot stopped down in studio and really I am just setting that AF once for a following set with models face distance pretty consistent (S on tripod).

I was mainly intending to say that very precise option is available should manual focus be desirable.

Like MGrayson said, and Stuart has also also echoed, I think OVF + a well implemented (i.e., ready for real-deal use) Live View is exactly right, covers all bases, and allows us to be agnostic (maybe "ecumenical" is the better word) on the OVF vs. EVF benefits thing. I for sure agree that there are times when focusing directly onto the sensor is what you want; or not needing to get your face behind the camera to frame up and shoot is preferable. Put some EVF terminals in the hot shoe, or wherever is best, to allow clipping on a Visoflex "typ 050" (come on Leica, make an updated standalone EVF with the spec on the SL, or better; refresh rate and latency probably more important than brute resolution) and we're probably all happy.

This "OVF + LV" was my mindset and I had been all set for a typ007, just for the Live View, from my beginning of getting into the S-system until about 6 months ago. After so long saving and using the typ006 for work in the meantime -- a long time when saving for the newer typ007, isn't it! -- I have crested some wave and don't feel the priority for Live View so highly anymore. I went from a Nikon system (D4s body) to the S-system and was super worried about completing work without Live View before the fact, and for many months afterward... It may sound trite, but you do just find a way to get it done without these things, where there is a will... etc., and now I think I'm OK just buggering on without Live View. Photographic life goes on without it. I don't shoot so much macro for work, and when I do, I'm always tethered--so it just kinda works itself out and I can get my work down without.

It has been super interesting to hear everyone's thoughts about all this. Thanks for letting me chip in and maybe see you guys around the way. And with that, I'm off to work!

Cheers

Tom

The S has its own niche in the MF world that is built on QUALITY, VERSATILITY and RUGGEDNESS.

The lenses are the best in class.

The upgrade to 63MP will be helpful but the key to success is faster and more accurate AF particularly in low light situations.

The OVF is IMHO still preferable to an EVF.
