Laeiszhalle (former Musikhalle), Martin Haller and Emil Meerwein 1904 - 1908. Architectonically and acoustically an alternative draft to Herzog & de Meuron's Elbphilharmonie. My preference for a string quartet would be the Elbphilharmonie for the details but for, say, Beethoven's 9th the Laeiszhalle.

Old Unilever-Haus, Helmut Hentrich und Hubert Petschnigg, 1961-1964; refurbishment Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner 2009-2012. It consists of three rectangular blocks arranged around a triangle, maybe best seen from above.

This is funny because my favorite string quartet, the Nathan quartet, usually performs in the Laeiszhalle. They also visit Basel quite often which is when I get to hear them.

Well, the Elbphilharmonie is pretty well overbooked, mainly, since many people want to see the new building. When the novelty has worn off, I expect performances to be sorted to the acoustic strenghts of each location. The Laeiszhalle is by no means a poor design, though.
