Shootist Posted July 29, 2007 Share #21 Posted July 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just checked this, and it is NOT the case - the camera doesn't pick up the naming from the inserted card until you take a photograph. this means that when you put a card in the camera it's okay to check if there is anything vital/missed etc. on it before formating. If you VIEW a image and then take a shot it will use the naming on the card. Best it to get in the habit of formatting cards as soon as you insert it in the SD slot. Otherwise you could LOOK at the images on the card and say "Oh I want to keep these" and then without thinking take a shot. That would change the naming convention to what is on the card. For me this is never going to be a problem. I have the cards marked and NEVER use cards for the chrome body in the black body or the other way around. The viewing is irrelevant - it's the taking of the shot which matters! Still, I agree with you about using different cards - I have blue lexar cards for my SILVER body and black SanDisk cards for my BLACK body!
carstenw Posted July 29, 2007 Share #23 Posted July 29, 2007 If there are already photos on the card, and you change the body, and the numbering is similar, will the M8 actually overwrite a photo, or does it simply mix them?

HI Carsten Neither If you put an unformatted card into the camera, then the next photograph will be the next increment in the highest numeric folder. i.e. you have two folders 107LIECIA this has L1071953.dng (as the highest number) 207LEICA this has L2070015.dng (as the highest number) if you take a photo, it will be in the 207LEICA folder and it will be called L2070016.dng I think this is logical. Carsten - it's worth mentioning that I've been using this numbering system (actually, L30x and L50x since April with 2 bodies, and I haven't made a mistake yet). It's simple and it works - the only criticism is that you must use a computer to get started the first time (only once), and maybe you should be able to do it in the camera. ho_co Posted July 30, 2007 Share #25 Posted July 30, 2007 Although I've got only one Nikon body (D200), it has a more flexible though also more peculiar numbering system. The Nikon files begin with three letters instead of Leica's one; and the user can set up a change for any or all of the three letters. I don't know how the D2 series works, but I infer from what I've read here that it is more flexible yet. In other words, Leica could come up with a more flexible system than they've got with really rather modest changes such as Jono already tried, with changing just the first letter. --HC
