aperture setting dial to the A position does not work

I've had the Leica Q for almost 2 years and never noticed that my 'A' aperture dial position does not work.  To be honest, I never use it but was surprised spending that kind of money and have an issue like this.  Now I'm asking is there something I'm doing wrong ( secret button).  I checked the manual and it seems straight forward - move ring like all other f/ settings on ring.  Anyone else have this issue or remedy?

I think you need to be more explicit when you say it doesn't work. What were you expecting it to do and in what way is it not doing it? If aperture is on A and speed is on A you are in auto exposure mode and if aperture is on A and you select a specific shutter speed you are then in S - shutter speed mode.

The dial does not move to the 'A' position. Stops on 1.7

Same with new Q-P I bought last week. Aperture setting rotation stops at f1.7. (Something I had never considered until seeing this thread.)

When I said 'freely' it is not as free as the clicks between the various aperture stops. There is a little more resistance as it moves from 1.7 to A - but only a little more resistance. Exactly what you would expect so that if moving the aperture ring without looking you can feel you have come to the end of the aperture settings.

You may only think it stops at 1.7.  It takes a lot of force to move the aperture ring from 1.7 to A on my Q.  I'm guessing Leica didn't want A to be selected accidentally.   I can rack the aperture to the far end without worrying that I might be in A mode.

Give it a try.  Don't be afraid to twist a bit harder.

Edit: Apparently my Q takes a bit more force than HighlanK's.   Maybe the fact that I haven't used A in quite a while has something to do with it.

This appears to be only for video: press the red button on the top plate and you can now easily switch aperture ring to A. 

 

LATER: Having reverted from video to still pic setting I find the aperture ring now does allow turning from 1.7 to A without resistance. So maybe try that NYCshooter?

BINGO!!! that worked.  I was surprised how much force was need move it to 'A'.
