raylamsk Posted August 9, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone have the same experience that four corners are black when the lens set to f/2.8? Cheers, Ray
Advertisement Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 Hi raylamsk, Take a look here R19mm First Version. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
leicamann Posted August 9, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 9, 2006 Yes..if you stop down starting to F5.6 onwards you will diminish the " vignetting" effect...and get excellent results. Remember , that is this lens weakness. Regards, Leica Mann:)
Leicalsf Posted August 9, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 9, 2006 does Super-Angulon 21mm f/4.0 have the same problem?? cuz i encounter this problem with my R19 as well.
adan Posted August 9, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 9, 2006 I have never found ANY superwide lens that does not vignette the corners one way or another - it is inherent in the optical properties needed to stretch a large part of a spherical universe to fit on a flat piece of film (or sensor) while remaining interchangeable. Some fisheye lenses minimize vignetting - at the cost of fisheye distortion, Some of the super-wide (17-35mm) zoom lenses also vignette a bit less than prime lenses - at the cost of a lot of bulk and reduced resolution. And of course lenses designed 'telecentrically' specifically for digital photography (as in the zooms on my Digilux 2 and Sony R1) also reduce vignetting - at the cost of being so intimately connected to the sensor that they cannot be interchanged. The glass cover-plate for the sensor is essentially the rear element of the lens design, there is no room for a focal-plane shutter, and they use dedicated leaf shutters within the lens. And, yes, the Super-Angulon 21s (both R and M) also show darkening of the corners.
leicamann Posted August 9, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 9, 2006 Andy has expalined it all very well , I would add the M 21mm asph...though alot of improvements have occured in the newer versions. Here is a thread that talks about it pretty extensively Leica Photography Forum: 19mm Elmarit R & 21mm Elamrit M Asph. And yes the R 21mm F4.0 does vignette....same issues and same solutions. We even have one member on the forum that will "traditionally " never , ever, comment on any R 21 mm F4.0 posted images, they simply hate the distortion and vignetting..that much!! Each to his own, I personally have sold many pictures with this lens and agree, the optics are excellent. Regards, Leica Mann:)
Micheal Posted August 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 11, 2006 Ray, I have very good luck with the new version 19mm Elmarit. Very good in the corners. A quantum leap from my M series 21 mm(?) Super Angalon, can't remember if it was a 20mm or 21mm, many years ago & a lot of neurons under the bridge. The 19 Elmarit also blows my 20mm Nikon out of the water. This is the primary focal lenghth I shoot (30 yrs) & am really pleased with the Leitz. Sincerely, Michael Dickey ps. remember you can not shoot with any filter on a 19 without cutoff. http://www.stardustgrafik.com
raylamsk Posted August 12, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted August 12, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Michael, Do you mean I shouldn't add an filter in from of the lens? Cheers, Ray
hrosell Posted August 12, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 12, 2006 Well Ray, You may see in the attached pic that there exists a cut-off particularly visible at the upper left and lower ight corners. At the time I had my 19 with a skylight attached just for rotection purposes... (Pleae note this image © Horacio Rosell belongs to the "Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt Buenos Aires" collection. Thanks.) Micheal Posted August 12, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 12, 2006 Ray, Correct. In various pieces of Leica literature it is stated not to use any filter on the older or new version of the R19 mm. Using a filter would account for dark or black corners. You could shoot through gels though. I just hold them in front of the lens.
