As an engineer, I’m not convinced it’s poor design. Given that size/weight are important considerations for this line, designing the lens to survive falls is a tall order.  My guess is that it was designed to fail like this to prevent worse damage to a body or other mechanism.  I’ve dropped two Nikon DSLR lenses and both had extensive damage to the zoom mechanisms that resulted in repairs equal to ~50% of the cost of a new lens. Hopefully, this repair will be easier/cheaper. Sorry this happened.

As an update to this thread - I took the lens in to Leica Mayfair and it was sent away to the Mothership.

Leica customer service have come back to me saying that the lens in not repairable but they are going to replace it for a sum which I feel is probably equal to what I anticipated the repair cost to be. It’s not entirely clear whether this will be a new lens or ex-demo etc and there is no timescale for delivery. Leica will keep the original lens.

I think this is a very fair outcome and once the replacement arrives I will be sure to let them know as I suspect Customer Service need positive feedback some of the time....🙄

I will update when it is resolved

Seems a reasonable outcome.

My golden rule is that I never put a camera bag down on a table, chair, or bed if there's anything in it unless I'm actively loading, unloading, etc. Always on the floor ...

Just heard from Customer Service that the lens has arrived from Germany at Leica Mayfair so collecting on Monday. I will try to find out where it actually came from/production news etc...

It is described as a “new” lens so maybe they have some back in production?
