Greg Haag Posted April 14, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am wanting to purchase a used 70mm lens, should I be looking for one with the auto focus drive replaced or is that not applicable on this lens? Thanks in advance, Greg
Advertisement Posted April 14, 2019 Posted April 14, 2019 Hi Greg Haag, Take a look here Used 70mm lens question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted April 14, 2019 Share #2 Posted April 14, 2019 Get one with current fix. The 70 is not immune, as evidenced by first post... Jeff
Greg Haag Posted April 14, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted April 14, 2019 Thanks Jeff. I began to wonder, I could not find a reference to this in any of the 70mm’s I was looking at. So I guess this means non of them have had the fix.
Jeff S Posted April 14, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 14, 2019 The fix that’s supposed to be permanent wasn’t announced until April, 2017, long after the 70 and other lenses were initially produced. Any lens could have since been sent in for service. A reputable dealer, like Leica Miami, will provide service information. Jeff
Greg Haag Posted April 14, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted April 14, 2019 Thanks, I bought my S006 and 180mm from Josh at Leica Miami and he was great to work with.
Jeff S Posted April 14, 2019 Share #6 Posted April 14, 2019 There are certainly other good dealers and reps, but Josh is a great place to start. Jeff
alan.y Posted April 14, 2019 Share #7 Posted April 14, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) If you have the serial number Leica can tell you whether a lens has had the AF motor replaced. Edited April 14, 2019 by alan.y

But important to ask when, as early replacements were with the old mechanism. Jeff

jip Posted April 28, 2019 Share #10 Posted April 28, 2019 (edited) My 70mm CS focus motor broke, and was then serviced by Leica, this was AFTER they said to have a permanent solution. It has now been working great since. Edited April 28, 2019 by jip
hoppyman Posted April 29, 2019 Share #11 Posted April 29, 2019 I don’t know if there is a typical amount of use for this lens as it is the standard, most common one for the system I would think. There are also versions with and without the Central Shutter. I use mine much more than any other lens on all of the systems in studio photography. Most often 500 to 1000+ exposure in a half day. A couple of times a month. Perhaps that is more than typical? Mine developed the AF defect, which was repaired for free and I got excellent support from Leica in Australia. I have to report that the Central Shutter then failed a few months later. I had thought the first repair meant a new warranty on the whole lens. It did not and this was an expensive repair. Yesterday not quite a year from when I got it back the second time, the Central Shutter just failed again mid shoot. Next will be a dispute on the exact repair warranty period as there are weeks of course between actual repair date in Wetzlar and receipt of lens back to me . I bet that has been frustrating and time consuming.
