3 weeks: M8+glass impressions

approaching a month since I got my M8. here are a newcomer to rf impressions.

my impressions of the M8 are based on my nikon dslr experience.hopefully

they might be of some value to others joining the rf party for the first time.

 

please remember, i am very raw with rf. these are just my initial impressions

and either or all impressions could have been formed because i am not a good

photog, have no vision, am thick, know nothing about rf and leica M8, don't know

how to use M8 and lens combinations. i could also be senile, weak, have extreme handshake and should give up this hobby.

 

initial research:

 

1. want a leica..subscribe to reidreviews.

2. the forum members here are a storehouse of info and very helpful.

3. if you are coming from a dslr background only ( or are young ), ignore references

to fov on 35mm film. why care unless you are intrested in film.

 

shopping:

 

1. always use fedex,ups or dhl. more expensive but you will get your equipment.

2. my best experience has been with tony at popflash

3. my london dealer, while helpful, sent me accessories by mail and it has gone awol.

UK dealer has some strange rules were they don't provide you with your shipping

tracking number!

 

M8 impressions:

 

1. once you pick up a M8, you will want to sleep with it, after using it all day.

2. if you are coming from a dslr...get a handgrip.

3. comfortable holding and focusing has, for me, been the biggest hurdle.

4. if you wear glasses get the appropriate diopter eyepiece and the x1.25 magnifier.

5. get 1 or 2 extra batteries. my spare one turned out faulty. returning it is more hassle

and expensive then getting a new one.

6. unexplained and intermitent happenings of the M8 have sorted themselves out

thus far.

7. registration process and free filters are pita. with different regions having

different requirements.

Lens:

 

1. i love my 75/2 'cron

2. the 35 'cron is excellent

3. i am disappointed with my 50/1.4 ,lux..off to solms!!

4. i have not tested my 28/2 'cron.

 

final thoughts:

 

1. don't get discouraged if your initial attempts with the m8 have evaporated your

secret desire to be seen as another hcb. it happens. it is happening with me!!
