geko Posted March 27, 2019 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I just noticed that I posted this to the english forum instead of the german one. So here it is in englisch 🙂 I have recently got a Leica Q (1) and I am surprised at the behaviour of the camera in terms of auto ISO. I've set 1/30 of a second as the longest shutter speed, but the camera does not go beyond 1 / 60s. If I close the aperture further, it raises the ISO value. Only when the ISO has reached the predetermined maximum, a longer exposure time is selected. Whether stabilization is on or off does not make any difference. I don't understand, why it's possible to select a longer exposure time in the auto ISO menu (max 1s) ?? Is there an explanation ? Thank you and best regards! Achim63 Posted March 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted March 27, 2019 Do you have the latest firmware for the Q? On my Q2 it works as expected - I have the max. time set to 1/15, and if it's dark enough it stays there and just changes the ISO when I close the aperture.
geko Posted March 27, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted March 27, 2019 Thanks Achim, the firmware version is 3.1.
LexS Posted March 29, 2019 Share #4 Posted March 29, 2019 (edited) I have a Q, fw3.1, I have set the max iso as 6400. When it is dark, it raises the iso value until 6400, then it sets the shutter longer and longer to e.g. 5 secs. So yes: it first highers the iso at 1/60 sec, then keeps it at the set maximum (6400) and when darker it slows the shutter speed. If you are very afraid to see noise, I recommend setting a max iso 3200; and set the OIS (optical image stabilisation) to "auto". Licheus Posted March 30, 2019 Share #5 Posted March 30, 2019 (edited) Sadly, it's normal behavior for the Q. Extensively discussed in the past: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/266969-leica-q-auto-iso-question/ I'd say it's something that got unnecessarily complicated during the design process. I do have question for fellow members who own a Q2: If you for example set the Auto ISO to 3200 maximum with 1/15 being the slowest shutter speed, will it "dip" below 1/15 when the light got poor enough? geko Posted March 30, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted March 30, 2019 Thank you for your replies ! I find it strange that Leica seems to have addressed this obvious quirk in the Q2, but doesn't fix it by a firmware update to the Q. Strange, but not a big deal for me, though 🙂
