I'm considering buying a 2nd series Elmarit-M 135/2.8 (the one with goggles) for use with my M8 but understand that these lenses are susceptble to balsam separation. Here in UK, there are certainly a number being advertised at low prices because of this problem at the present time.

Is this something that can be cured by a skilled lens mechanic - and is it an expensive operation? If it can be cured, is there anyone in UK who is particularly skilled at carrying out the work? I wouldn' want to send a lens to Solms any time soon, knowing how backed up they are with work at the moment

You could try Optical Instruments (Balham) Ltd. - Manufacturing, Servicing and Repair of all types of Optical Instruments

They did a very good job on a Summaron of mine that had this problem. Old-fashioned company, very experienced.

Thanks David - I've bookmarked their website. I'll certainly be more confident about purchasing old lenses knowing that most of the problems caused by can be rectified
