kinross Posted February 2, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello. This is my first post on S forum. I am in the process of buying a S E medium format Leica. I am very much looking forward to trying the medium format. I am keeping my M9. My question is will my SF 58 flash work on S. I suspect it will be ok but interested to hear if any members have any thoughts on this and medium format in general. Thanks in advance for any comments. Mike. darylgo Posted February 3, 2019 Share #4 Posted February 3, 2019 The sf-58 works on my S-E, it's a great flash and the sensor/flash play well together to give good images. I find this flash to be less harsh than equivalent Nikon flashes. The S-E and S system in general has not seen much that is new for several years. It's a beautiful system, and the prices for used lenses have fallen significantly. Similar to the M9 the image quality is beyond good despite it's age and other cameras/systems having higher specs. kinross Posted February 3, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted February 3, 2019 Thank you for encouragement. I have been looking for SE for a while now and have found a new one with lens in a UK Leica specialist in a sale. I am reducing my M 9 system and part exchanging a 50 MM Summilux, 90 MM macro Elmar and 28 MM Elmarit. I am keeping a 50 MM Summarit and 35 MM Summicron, my most used lens. I also have a couple of older lens a 90 MM Summicron Canadian and 135 Tele- Elmar Leitz. I have had these since I bought my first Leica, an M 3 in the 1960's which I still have and use. thanks again. Stuart Richardson Posted February 3, 2019 Share #6 Posted February 3, 2019 Hi Mike, It is a lovely system, and strangely a good value in a lot of ways, now that it is so inexpensive on the used market. While there are other camera systems that might offer more features and or slightly more resolution on paper, few are convincingly better than the S, and in my opinion none are better than the S in terms of its handling...I am still using my S006 since 2014, as I have not yet seen anything that is clearly better at a price point that I can stomach. That includes all the 35mm cameras, the Fuji GFX (great camera, but the images are not significantly better than the S to me, and the handling is worse apart from the size advantages). I work as an artist and do very large prints, and while the S is fantastic at that, I do look forward to even more resolution, but I will likely stick with the S006 if the S3 is priced as highly (or higher) as the S007 was when it was released. Regarding the flash, I have not used the SF58, though I had been using a Metz 54, which was Leica's flash for the M and R system in the 2000s. Recently I switched to a Profoto A1 and could not be happier...it is so much better for my uses. That said, I primarily do nighttime work and with manual adjustments. It does not have the facility to work automatically on the S. This does not matter to me, but it may be a deal breaker for you.
kinross Posted February 3, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted February 3, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks Stuart. I do not use flash much but it is handy to have for the odd occasion. I take mostly landscape for my own pleasure and enjoy printing the results. Looking forward to trying some A3 on my Epson P 800. one thing has occurred to me. The S files will be large. I hope my Apple Mac can handle them. It is a 2011 year with 2.8 ghz intel 7 core. and 8Gb memory. We will see. Mike.
albertknappmd Posted February 3, 2019 Share #8 Posted February 3, 2019 A secret weapon of the SF 58 is HSS... Results are extraordinary in SF40 that I own and suspect even better with SF58. Albert

Lossless compressed DNG often comes in as smaller files than my Monochrom, 8GB of RAM might be a limitation... john
kinross Posted February 3, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted February 3, 2019 Hi John. Thanks for that info. I will wait and see how I get on when I have the S. I may upgrade to Apple pro core type. Not cheap but would do the job. I do not need a monitor as I use Ezeo. The Imac is turned to face the wall. I have an M9 mono mk1. Would never get rid of it. Thanks. Mike. kinross Posted February 6, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted February 6, 2019 Took delivery of SE this morning with Summarit 70 MM. Beautiful camera but must say I am finding it a bit intimidating after many many years with M. Reading through instructions and will no doubt get there, I usually do. Never had DSLR before so a steep learning curve. Thanks for input so far. Now back to instructions. Mike.
darylgo Posted February 6, 2019 Share #12 Posted February 6, 2019 +1 Beautiful Camera and excellent ergonomics. Customizing the buttons adjacent to the screen with long presses helps navigate more easily. There is a past post iirc with customization by forum members. My long press buttons are: ISO, Exp Comp, Profiles and Drive Mode.

kinross Posted February 6, 2019 Author Share #14 Posted February 6, 2019 I will certainly look at customising once I understand more fully the menu system.Just reading book and experimenting with camera at the moment. One thing I have done is bought another 8 gb of ram for my IMac. This takes me up to 16 gb

One note on the flash: I am using the SF40 with the S2 from time to time. It is plenty for what I need, obviously has quite a smaller footprint size and weight wise. The SF40 has got HSS on board just the the 58. I was positively surprised that the SF40 HSS even works with my oldish S2.
kinross Posted February 16, 2019 Author Share #16 Posted February 16, 2019 I would like to fire my SF 58 off camera (SE ) with wireless transmitter. Have any users of this method any recommendations for a system I should look out for. Thanks. Mike
