Wow!  I think I did it.  At least now the lever moves like butter, whereas before it just did not move.  There's a cam that the lever spindle pushes against which becomes dry and sticky.  I just took the first two bolted rings off and then was able to access it, and give it a slight dab of 3-in-1 motor oil.  

This should work for most early R's.  My R7 was sticking, so I tore apart my R4s to play with.  They're both the same.

However, I'm now not too sure if I reassembled things correctly.  Seems to work, but could someone with an R7 please tell me if the 3 unbolted rings shown below look like they're in the proper place?
